flank the pivot man must be strong, quick, smart and tremendously aggressive. They must be made of enduring stuff, The old notion that a is a fullback with his brains knocked out is He is, a8 a matter of fact, the fulcrum on which his side of the line is balanced. Small guards have made football history, but most coaches prefer heft and muscle in the posts alongside the center. Guards play close to the center on >ffanse, and sometimes cone out of the lina to lead the interference. They are taught to break through the line to knock down defending’ fullbacks, or go downfield as blockérs on wide sweeps. On defense they must smother all plays headed bdetween the! tackles. A quick, pulverizing charge is necessary if they are to hold their own in the furious, close contact play of the forward wall. Few spectators ever watch the work which the guards do in a game, because most eyes follow the ball. To an experienced football man, however, the play of a crack guard en offense or defense is a sight to remember,

In addition to the recent $500,000 employee wage increase, granted by a state arbitration board, the costs of all other factors involved in providing your trgnsit service have increased sharply.

To serve you better, over 400,000 mofe miles were travelled by transit vehicles during the first eight months this year compared to the same period last year. It required over 28,000 more hours of operation to provide this additional service. Other operating expenses of your transit company such as materials, supplies and taxes are continuing to go up, up, up! In other words, every way you figure, it’s costing more and more to provide good transit service. Ee

At the same time, the number of revenue passengers carried is FALLING OFF FAST. Three million less revenue passengers were carried during r the first eight months of 1948, compared to the same period in 1047. Some way must be found to safeguard your vitally important transit service.
