larly information regarding the| highly destructive weapon which was being developed through re-| search,” Mr. Russell testified. | Approached 3d Person Mr. Eltenton was alleged to} have told Mr. Chevalier he had a contact with the Sowlet government who, thought the USSR should be entitled to share in|f technical developments uncovered | by her ally, the United States. Mr. Chevalier, according to the Russell testimony, then approached a third person who was working in the Berkeley laboratory and told him what Mr. Eltenton wanted. “This third person also was informed by Chevalier that Eltenton had a source through which he could relay the information to the Boviet government,” the witness said. “This third person said that he considered such attempts as this to secure information a treasonable act and that he certainly would not have anything to do with it.” At the request of committee Chairman J. Parnell Thomas (R. N. J.), Mr. Russell later identified the third person for the record as J. Robert Oppenheimer. J Mr, Russell said he had talked with Dr. Oppenheimer about the matter and that he had requested that his name be kept out of the investigation. The former FBI man's testimony linked the famous physicist with Mr. Eltenton again two years later. It described a party given Nov, 10, 1944, by Mrs. Bransten, suspected social contact arranger for Communist agents, which was attended by Mr. Eltenton and his wife. : J “At the time,” Mr. Russell said, “Eltenton was trying to educate a scientist along Soviet lines since he lent this particular scientist a copy of the Soviet constitution which he asked him to read. I can identify this scientist if necessary.” Later on, he did identify the scientist as Dr. Oppenheimer. Among the questions the com-; mittee wants to ask is, if the Russell testimony is. true, did Dr. Oppenheimer report the matter to security officers?
