rulers, Until his surrender to India last week, the Nizam was permitted to maintain an army of his own, to coin his own money, and to bear the title “His Exalted Highness,” whereas all other native rulers, rajahs and maharajahs are only “Highnesses” Sir Osman All is undoubtedly the world's richest man. His personal fortune’ is conservatively estimated at 115 billion dollars. His palace is equipped with bank vaults of modérn construction which hold about $300 million in gold coins and bars and] some $200 million in jewelry and precious stones. This treasure is guarded day and night by a picked guard of Mohammedan mercenaries, Gift of $100 Million The Nizam’'s colossal fortune and privileged status were mainly due to his unusual business acumen, diplomatic ability, and knack of getting slong with the British. He gave proof of the latter by his active support of England's war effort in both world conflicts. In 1914-18 Sir Osman made Britain a cash present of $100 million. In addition, he equipped two infantry divisions entirely at his own expense and sen. them to France to fight on the Allied side. In World War II he made the {British Crown a present of two) complete Spitfire squadrons. In 1932, in order to raise his {prestige among the world's 220 million Mohammedans, the ruler. of Hyderabad induced the late| Abdul Medjid II, Caliph (or| spiritual head) of the Mohammedan world, to give his only] daughter, beauteous Princess, Durru Shehvar (meaning “Imperial Pearl”) in marriage - to Crown Prince Azam Jah, the Nizam's eldest son and heir. A Hord Worker The private life of Sir Osman Ali, whose ultimate fate now will be decided by the men who shape India’s destinies, is the direct opposite of what his fabulous wealth might suggest. While he has a harem, he leads a life ‘guided by moderation. He, is a hard worker, rises early, shuns all outward signs of luxury. His meals are positively frugal, and as a devout Mohammedan he strictly abstains from alcohol. A short man of 63 with a cropped moustache, the Nizam always dresses his sparse figure in Western clothes, with the only exception of the Mohammedan s mandatory turban. : The political and social system of Hyderabad state is based on the feudal tenure of huge areas of land by Mohammedan nobles, who are vassals of the Nizam
