Boxer Is 11th Ring Fatality This Year
Chicken Thompson
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 28 (UP)—Bill (Chicken) Thompson, Negro heavyweight, today was the 11th boxer American to die of injuries received in the ring this year. Thompson, 21-year-old Philadelphia fighter, died last night at Temple University Hospital where he had lain unconscious since being knocked out in a bout last Thursday night, An operation for removal of a blood clot on his brain failed to save his life. The lanky 190-pounder went down under a hail of blows tossed at him by Johnny Haynes of New York in the eighth and final round of their bout at Philadelphia arena. A thudding left hook to the jaw that drove Thompson partially through the ropes was the knockout blow. Goes Into Coms , After vainly trying to lift himself from the. floor, the young fighter went into a coma from which he never emerged. Earlier this year, Thompson was involved in a near-fatal rin accident, in a bout in which he def Eddie Franklin of Philadelphia. Franklin collapsed after e bout and was rushed to the ospital for a brain operation. He" recovered and retired, from the ring.
