Although quite big, the twin-engine, three-place. high-wing craft is capable of landing on an . aircraft carrier and was designed’ primarily for that type of operation. It is normally propelled by the two reciprocating engines, has tricycle landing gear and folding wing and tail sections for easy deck handling and maintenance.

Hangman for 72

Inventor of Trap And Special Knot

EPWORTH; Ill, Sept. 8—Hundreds of law enforcement and prison officials were expected here today when George Philip Hanna, the hangman, is buried at the Big Prairie Cemetery.: Mr. Hanna died Monday at Evansville, Ind. He was 78. He served in his time as hangman at 72 state and federal executions, all of which, he always said, were “quick, painless and clean.” +» Mr. Hanna said he started on his career to. make hangings painless because he witnessed a badly bungled hanging when he was a boy. The condemned man squirmed for several minutes in agony after the noose became taut, he said.

“Made Me Sick”

“That made me sick,” he told friends. “From then on, I decided I'd devote my life to making hanging painless.” Mr. Hanna invented three devices to carry out that end. One was a special trap with a foolproof release. The second was a conditioning process for the rope to make it flexible and unstrecchable. The third was a special knot guaranteed to tighten at impact. He prided himself on being a technician, not an executioner. “You wouldn't call the electrician who inspects an electric chair an executioner,” he said. Mr. Hanna and his brother, Harry, operated a 2100-acre farm near here for years,

Electric Workers Pledged to Strike

Nearly 400 strike-pl RL stallation workers of the Western Electric working in the Indiana Bell Telephone building today were walling reports from Jego tiation meetings in Chicago where a 31 cents an hour increase is being sought. The strike was voted in 43 states, including Indiana, June 30. K. A. Silvers, chief steward of the Association of Comm

sald the union was preparing to test the constitutional validity of the Indiana anti-strike law and throw at least a hundred pickets around the Telephone building. It was pointed out that such a picket line would affect telephone service indirectly and would come under the restraint of the law, The union originally demanded
