when I opened the bidding with one no trump. She did not want to pass; she would not bid no trump with a singleton, so I think she made a good choice in bidding two spades. I decided against putting any more pressure on her. She had passed originally and kept the bidding open for me, and furthermore, I did not think she would dare to bid spades on the t of four-card suit that she held. However, I still think it was a good bid.

Men and Women—

By ERNEST E. BLAU 8 A MALE, I must admit that my judgment of , women's clothes is likely to be colored by what's inside them. I'd be inclined to award the Grand Prix in fashions to any walst-and-slacks ensemble worn by a specially lush looking little number. On the other hand, you could drape a female dragon in a $600 dress that would make the experts fall on one another's necks and make little babbling sounds—and I probably wouldn't give it a second glance. They say French women can do things with a couple yards of cloth—poke it here, pull is there, let out the flounce, take in the yoke and coil the voile in a way that really sends men. But I don’t

YOU'D HAVE to travel a long way, it seems to me, to find more smartly dressed women than you see on Fifth Ave, New York, any day of the week, between 34th and 57th Streets. And that’s what Jo} of foreign visitors say,

How do American cities compare, in well dressed women? A poll of 500 fashion leaders’ shows that the best dressers are most noticeable in New York, Atlanta, Miami, Washington, Dallas, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Seattle, Among the lowest ratings are Chicago and Boston. Chicago, they say, is too much a mixture of good, bad and indifferent. And Boston is too pokey. Boston incidentally was recently accused of having the country’s worst feminine complexions, too, What an unfortunate city!

YOUR MANNERS— SITUATION: Your teenage daughter has begun to monopolize the telephone in your house. WRONG WAY: Decide that it is just something a family has to put up with. RIGHT WAY: Tell her she must limit the length of her calls to a certain number of minutes. Other members of the family have rights that should be respected. » s . SITUATION: You disagree violently with a statement made by a social acquaint-

ance, WRONG WAY: Say flatly, “That is perfectly absurd” and go on to show why. RIGHT WAY: Argue your point—but do it graciously. Each person has a right to his own opinions.

Beauty— See the Doctor

On Skin Care

By ALICIA HART NEA Staff Writer

ANY COLLEGE girl with an acne condition should go back to school with a doctor-ap-proved program of skin care. Skipping that visit to the doctor, before she leaves home, for a line-up on what's needed in the way of general health improvement as well as skin care while she’s away at school may lead to regrets. : ‘ One of the most important aids to clearing up a troubled skin is a diet that excludes many of the college-shop confections which are so tempting to the school girl.
