Ul. S. Launches

Defense of Davis Cup

Singles Slated Today, Doubles Tomorrow

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UP)— With 27-year-old Ted Schroeder in the key role, the heavily favored U. 8. team launched its defense of the Davis Cup Forest Hills. Parker of Los Angeles . met Bflly Sidwell in the opening isingles match at the famous tennis stadium, and Schroeder, of La Crescenta, Cal, was due to {meet the veteran Adrian Quist in ‘the second match. The lone doubles duel will be played tomorrow, and then two more singles matches will be played Monday in the five-match team competition. In Monday's singles, today’s ngs are reversed, with Parker playing Quist and Schroeder facing Sidwell. Yanks Favored Although the Yanks ruled aa odds-on choice to retain the cup for the third straight year, perhaps by a 5-0 shutout, Schroeder found himself very much on the spot. 3 In the first place, his selection as a singles player was vociferously challenged because he had lost out in the only iwo tournaments he entered this year. And in the second place he drew his first assignment against Quist, who holds the key to the meager Aussie success hopes. It was not only up to Schroeder to deat Quist today, but alse to give him such a vigorous go-ing-over that the 35-year-old veteran from “down under” can't play doubles tomorrow. Should Quist be able to team with Colin ng for the doubles, Australia

will have its best chance of victory in the classic series. Parker Seeks Revenge Parker went into his match against Sidwell hoping to make up for that memorable day in 1939 when his defeat cost the Yanks the cup. \ The U. 8. won the first two matches in the series that year. Then Quist and Jack Bromwich won the doubles to make the score 2-1. Quist beat Riggs, and s0 it was up to Parker to down Bromwich and save the cup. Frankie didn't do it. Bromwich swept the victory in straight sets. Last year it was a different story. The Aussies won only the doubles as they absorbed a 4-1 shellacking The U. 8. figured to use Billy Talbert of New York City and Gardnar Mulloy of Miami against the Aussies in doubles tomorrow. Sidwell probably will play with Long in the event Quist can't
