the Interstate O 11 Compact Mr. McNeil Commission meeting that ended Wednesday, said the life expectancy of Texas gas reserves al-

© ready have been “materially re-

duced.” Texas is where the bulk of natural gas comes from, and has about 84 per cent of the nation's reserves. But the life of those reserves |

has been greatly reduced by building of pipelines—and contin-

ued granting of pipeline permits by the Federal Power Commission, Mr. Culberson said. “The ability to withdraw gas from these reserves by transporting ‘pipelines has been increased materially,” ‘he added. “The result is that the estimated life ex-

pectancy by the most optimistic| .

witness, who placed it at about 43 years, has been materially reduced. Doleful Prophets

“While it's true deeper drilling is resulting in discovery of more gas or distillate oil producing fields, in my opinion the fact remains that the superior uses befng made of gas in the chemical industry and for other purposes, vl create new demands which will substantially if not entirely absorb any additional reserves that may be discovered by deep drilling.

Texas, he said, does not want

fo build a wall around itself,

eeping all its natural gas. The state “will always share her abundance with the balance of the country. But I believe that to deplete this great natural gas resource with its resulting impact on our local economy is working a great injustice on posterity. “Natural gas is not just something you burn under your teapot. It is the source of innumerable chemicals. Valuable and necessary products, plastics and other items derived from natural gas, are consumed in great quan-

tities. ' So whatever we made of}

the problem of the producing states. “I do not believe,” he said, “that the production of any natural re-

The new seal is the first offspring of the group of seals which arrived at the zoo a year ago. Mother seal “wears” her new fur coat in her mouth, at least long enough to get the pup to a secluded ledge in their zoo pool for swimming lessons.
