said the subject of rents has not even been discussed by the advisory board here, “The only activity along that line now: is an increase in the umber of landlord petitions for upward readjustments in individual rental projects,” he said. In Galesburg, Ill, landlords won an 18 per cent boost in rent! ceilings yesterday. The Galesburg Advisory Rent Control Board obtained the increase by showing that the landIt was the first such increase granted under the 1948 rent control law. In Chicago, a landlords’ association sent questionnairies to 30,000 members in preparation for a request for a general rent increase. + ‘Justify An Increase’ A spokesman for the group said he thought it could justify

eggs were 24c a dozen, butter sold for 27c a pound and a nice new car— your choice of model and color—was delivered to your door for about $700? True, wages have gone up a great deal since, too, but somehow it is harder to make ends meet nowadays. As far as the Gas Utility's “cost of living” same price increases have gone into effect on items that are as essential to the Utility as butter, eggs and automobiles are essential to you. Average hourly wages have increased from 55% ¢ an hour to $1.35 with 460 more persons on the payroll. Coal costs have gone from $4.14 a ton to $9.29, and it takes 350,000 more tons of coal a year. Oil increased from 5c a gallon to 13¢ a gallon, and 9 million more gallons a year go into the gas making process
Not that it will do any good, but, as the old saying has it, misery loves company. Do you remember the days when
.
than were needed in 1936.
The average wage earner makes more money than he did in 1936. The average company has increased the cost of its product to reflect the increased costs of manufacture . . . in fact, the items are few and far between that sell for the same price today that
they sold for 12 years ago.
Yet, in spite of increases in the cost of gas manufacture... in spite of huge sums spent in increasing the gas plant’s capacity, in laying miles and miles of new gas mains to serve thousands of -- new customers . . . in spite of meeting all the bond payments on schedule . . . there has been no need, up to now, for a general
increase in the rates charged for gas.
It is a fair assumption that you'll agree this is a good job. It

body and prosperity for all of us. The credit for this job goes to no one man. It wasn’t a one-man job. It was the result of cooperation and understanding between employees and management; well-trained ahd courteous employees who, when the need arose, worked around the clock .. . and management that has been impartially interested in discharging its civic responsibility of making the gas service in Indianapolis as good as it has been humanly possible to make it.
