Bleeding under the mucous membrane of the mouth is common. Gradually the skin becomes dry and rough. Swelling. around the ankles is common, the heart palpitates and its beat is feeble and irregular. Mental depression is ‘characteristic. These symptoms come with advanced scurvy, and are not seen so often now that we know how they can be prevented. In mild’ forms there may be only such inconspicuous signs as poor healing of wounds, a tendency to certain infectious disseases, easy bleeding when cut and increased susceptibility to ulcers of the stomach. This type of scurvy can be discovered only-by making chemical examinations of the blood or urine for ascorbic acid. Danish Stuffed Cabbage Balances the Budget

By MARIE M¢CARTHY “Cabbages and Kings’ once connoted an extreme contrast. But since the purposeful proletariat has depleted “King Row” and the lowly vegetable has become tops in

Whether in Jiggs’ favorite dish or in more festive guise, cab-

bage is popular with papa and we do cook to please the gentleman in the house. To beat the meat prices, try Danish Stuffed Cabbage. Cut a lid off the stem end of a large héad of cabbage. Strip off loose, outside leaves, Cut a cavity in the head large enough to hold this stuffing. Mix one and one-half pounds of ground beef (use leftover meat if you like) with three tablespoons of ground fat pork. Drop in two eggs, one at a time, working thoroughly through the meat. Season with salt, pepper and grated onion, kneading in as much milk as the meat will absorb. Do not let separate. Fill the cabbage head with the stuffing. Allow room for the meat to swell, Replace the lid and cover with two large outer leaves. Tie securely and boil in salted water for two or more hours, depending upon the size of the cabbage. When done, remove from the water, drain thoroughly and uncover the head, placing it open side down on the platter. Surround with boiled potatoes. Don’t forget the catsup. Red cabbage is right with pork plate or with tame or wild duck. Try it like this and you'll have it again. For a medium-sized head, use one onion and three cooking apples, unpeeled. Chop the apples| coarsely; cover all with water and boil slowly for three hours.

Teen Problems—

Then add four tablespoons of sugar, two tablespoons of red wine; salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 10 minutes. Lift out the cabbage and thicken the liquid to a thin cream sauce consistency. Two tablespoons of butter and flour usually will suffice. Pour over the cabbage and serve. Buffet Roquefort Slaw Platter: Hollow out a large head of cabbage to within a small distance from the edge. Turn back loose outside leaves to resemble a rose; tie loosely but carefully in a cloth and crisp in the icebox.

Grate th: cabbage removed from the head and enough more to overfill the center. Wrap and chill in the icebox. Prepare regular Roquefort (or Blue) salad dressing, mashing in the cheese. Then ,fold in enough whipped cream to make smooth but not stiff, Place the hollowed cabbage on a chilled platter; fill the head with grated cabbage, mixed with dressing, rounding the top; dust with paprika. Tuck radish roses into the crevices between the leaves. Surround with sliced roast beef, tongue and cold cuts. And now for the trick to banish the bane—the odor of cabbage while cooking! Place a generous

heel or slice of bread, soft side |down, atop the kettle of cabbage. Remove and discard the bread \when the cabbage is done cookling. You'll be delighted.

Be Hospitable and Popular

By JEAN | LOOKING BACK on the

summer, can you point with pride to a long season of popularity? Or do you shiver with shame recalling the dates you didn't have?

A brutal ‘question? Well, let's face it. First, a word of | ‘warning to the popular guys and gals. Don’t boast! Nobody cares two pennies about your past conquests. And you kids who didn’t click! Shall we try to guess why? . » » . ' GETTING started on dating is mostly a matter of being in the right place at the right time. The guy or gal who sits home alone will be left alone. Going out and about to a beach or a club; to school parties and games, to skating rinks and ski runs—that's the way to meet people. If you're a member of a big family, chances are the gang will follow you home. Folks naturally gravitate toward a house full of people and fun. + And dates result! BUT suppose you're an only child? Or your brothers and sisters are far away from you in age? Well then, you'll have to make an effort.

THE HOUSE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY

Invite the crowd to your house at every opportunity. They'll get the habit eventually. Mom may have to help you at first. Ask her advice and don’t

ignore her suggestions, Soon you'll be on your own.

Braid, Beading Dress Up Fall Outfits

‘By BARBARA. B BUNDSCHU Uni Press § Correspondent NEW YORK, Sept. 2—Elegant braid and beading dress up & restrained slimness in the made-to-order suits and dresses presented for fall by Bally Miigrim, Braid trims the front of a wool suit. A satin checkerboard -

crepe dress. Crocheted yarn outlines a drapery or a shoulder line on a sheer wool dress. - . Handsomest of the group is a theater costume of black D completely covered with a & gly pattern of black soutache braid. The dress, hemmed slightly above the ankle, is slim with a wide oval neckline and cap sleeves. Over it, in the same braid-on-crepe material, is a straight - hanging, waist« length cape, whose fronts cross to fasten snugly at each side of the waistline. The cape may be worn hanging straight or wrapped by hand as well as fastened. A similar dress in the same material comes with a high-waist-ed, long-sleeved bolero.

Narrow bands of Persian lamb are combined with black braid on the front of a wine-colored broadcloth suit. The ornamentatio starts shoulder wide, narrows fo the front panel of the jacket and widens again to include the suit pockets. The suit's matching jersey blouse has a brief nécklace of the same braid and fur trim.

Another “grandmother's day” trimming turns up on a jade green crepe dress in multiple rows of tiny covered buttons. They run from armhole to armhole across the square neckline and down the side front panels of the skirt, Bead or shirring trims on crepe dresses are centered as a rule on one shoulder and the opposite hip. One black tissue faille dress has a shoulder ruffle of its own material matched, farther back than most, by a ruffled drapery at side back. For a truly formal evening, Milgrim presents a handsome, back draped gown of black slipper satin topped with snug waistlength jacket of oyster blue satin. The jacket, with a casual, short kimono sleeve, is edged with a delicately beaded cord.

Lightweight People Use Less Vitamin C

Small people need less vitamin C in their daily diets than large people, recent .research at the Louisiana Experiment Station suggests. Studies of the use of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the body showed that the blood} plasma of smaller, lighter-weight people kept vitamin C at higher levels than the larger heavier people on the same diet. The difference ranged as high as 61 milligrams percent in one person weighing only about 132 pounds to as low as 39 in another weighing about 167 pounds, both getting the same quantity of the vitamin.

With the Queen?” Before reading further, however, I would like to have you picture the following combination of cards: North has the same spade holding, but only three hearts, five diamonds to the ace-jack-10 and the ace and one club. South has the same spade holding, three hearts to the ace-king, four diamonds to the queen and four clubs to the king. West opens the jack of spades. In this case the whole hand depends upon. the diamond finesse. Therefore South, the declarer, should put on a small spade from dummy, win with the ace in his own hand and take the diamond finesse into the East hand. Now, re-

The only chance of + making this contract is to have the club suit break or to find West with the king of spades, If the club suit does not break, East is the odds-on favorite to hold the fourth club.
