Apply additional drops of linseed oil to the rubber from time to time. In case you don’t know what you are doing, you are applying a very thin coat of shellac to the surface. When this coat is dry, apply another coat in the same manner. You can go on in this fashion until four coats are on. The shellac used on these subsequent coats should be thinned down with denatured alcohol, After the final coat is hard, dip a lint-free cloth in denatured alcohol ‘and rub over the surface very lightly.

The reason they had rofted out was because of dampness. We gave our brother-in-law a piece we once wrote on drying out a basement, but he didn’t take it in the spirit that it was given. Anyway, after he lost his temper he went out and got 3 jack post and some 6 ins. by 6 ins. timbers. He set one of these beams down on the basement floor alongside one of the rotted posts, placed the jack on it, and then

turned the jack just enough to relieve the pressure on the rotted post. He removed the rotted post and you could see where it had cracked the concrete floor allowing moisture to get to the base. Our boy cut out this damaged concrete, dug a hole about one {foot square under the floor and filled this with concrete, 1 part ment, 2 parts sand and 3 parts

Builders to Hold Open House Here:

Public to Inspect 250 Homes Sept. 5-12

Marion County Residential Builders Association will hold open-house for the public next week in observance of National Home Week, Sept. 5 through 11. More than 250 houses, representing a value of approximately $2 million, will be open for public inspection throughout the city|, and county. Co-operating with other private home builders over the nation, the 250 members of the county assoclation will show dwellings in |various stages of construction. |The week is sponsored generally by the National Association of Home Buflders of ‘the United States, with which the county association of builders is amMliated. Acquaint Public Fred L. Palmer, chairman of the local National Home Week committee, said the primary purpose of the observation is to acquaint the public with the kind and quality of houses being built in the Indianapolis area and to impress the public with the rec-ord-breaking number of houses being built by private builders. During the period from Jan. 1 to Aug. 1 of this year, 2424 houses have been ‘started in Marion County. Their estimated value is

Mr. Palmer estimated that the. number built this year would ex-| jceed the 4320 housing units built! {in 1947. The estimated value of all the houses built in the Indialiapolts area in 1947 is $33,402, Members of the local National

it's just about Lamerrow right! now, In short, if you have any doubts #8 to how comfortable you are going to be in January-—better

about it. As we've mentioned before, heating engineers and contractors have lots of ways and means to increase the efficiency of your presént heating plant so that yout will get the most heat for the least fuel. By the way, fuel may be a little on the short side this winter and so none of us.can afford to support a wasteful heating plant even if we print our own money. Complete house insulation has long ago proved that it can save) so much fuel and money that not; having it is an extravagance. If your home is not insulated,’ vou should give this matter a lot of good hard thinking. Storm windows, weatherstrip-| ping, storm porches and sealing up cracks and other openings require only m short time before! they have paid for themselves in| glving you more comfort, and less drafts.

Guard Against Invasion Of Nesting Wildlife

What with the talk and the speeches and the arguments and the bad tempers it's getting pretty hard to get a word in edge-wise. Here a few edge-wise words that managed to

slip in before the door was closed. Those rubber rollers on washing machines will last a lot longer if you relieve the pressure on them after you are finished with the day's laundry. Various forms of wildlife are right now planning .to use your home as a nesting place for the coming winter. Take an afternoon off to close or sereen any opening that might provide an entrance for mice, rats, squirrels and chipmunks. Next time you replace a sh AE on one of those braided appliance cords, wrap a little friction tape over the end of the insulation. This will keep it from B Uhraiding and fraying at the edge Cracks in the Lonancn around the furnace or the pipes can be
