of New York over one of the largest fields in the history of the event. Mrs. Goldman had to make a very unusual play in today's hand to defeat the contract. Her partner's opening lead of the queen of hearts was won by declarer with the king. South immediately started to set up the diamond suit, by leading the 10 of diamonds. Mrs, Goldman (East) won with the king. »
» ” HER natural play now would be to ‘return her’ partner's heart suit, but if she had done this, declarer would have made the contract. Realizing that South was attempting to set up the diamond suit, her next play was the king of clubs, though she was risking the loss of a club trick. Declarer did his best by refusing to win this trick, and Mrs. Goldman continued with another club. had to win with the ace and a diamond was returned. If Mrs. Goldman had made the mistake of winning this with the ace, once again South could have made the contract. Buf, she let declarer hold the trick, and now he was unable to cash nine tricks. The lead of the king of clubs into the ace is the play called the Deschapelles Coup.
Muted Shades Are Favored In Fall Colors
By NEW TORI Aug. 30 (UF) — The muted colors of an old spice garden—with a dash of red cinnamon candy-—are used by Vera Maxwell for a classic collection of {411 suits and coats.’ The cinamon drop—a soft American Beauty colored tweed—| is used for what appears to be one of the season’s handsomest coats. A single-breasted, goldbuttoned reefer, it’s loosely fitted
to the waist and flared below.|
The collar is a brief, high, rounded shawl. The price, under $100. To dress up the coat Miss Maxwell offers a long black northern seal stole, lined in matching crepe, priced under $80. The stole-is shown also with this season's variation of one of Miss Maxwell's favorite themes— a . back-buttoned, princess line dress with a flaring skirt in pepper and salt worsted. Other suits and coats in ‘the collection include neatly and geometrically seamed bédy lines, contrasting jersey linings, cuffs and collars and a blouse Miss Maxwell allegedly dreamed up from a worn-out sweater. The blouse, made up in jersey,
wraps around the body with aj’
high surplice line. Miss Maxwell said she got the idea from lapping over a stretched cashmere sweater to give an extra layer of warmth and better fit.
It's shown in striped jersey
with a thyme green suit which shows off the jersey again at its collars and cuffs. Cinnamon brown is combined
with a blue-gray and brown jerer back-button dress and coat ensemble. The dress has a moderate V neckline and softly
sey in an
rounded collar. Shades of marigold, forget-me-not and rose are combined with
green for a soft tweed short coat “
topping a slim-skirted suit in green broadcloth jersey.
Another mixed tweed is used for a Persian lamb-collared suit in a black, beige, blue and nutmeg
combination.

WATCH FOR COLOR in watches. That's the newest thing sponsored by Gubelin, Swiss watch+ making firm. The company, which was registered in Switzerland almost 100 years ago, also is showing king-size sport watches for women to wear with tailored clothes. At present, color on wrist watches is found chiefly in the straps. Some of these, of plaited suede strips, are more than an inch wide. The brilliant colors are accented with gold trimmings in some models. Also featuring bright colors are the new very thick watch cords of fabric or leather. Gubelin expects to have a line of watches with gaily colored

ties. A large thin watch, much like a man's pocket watch, is worn on a long thin chain about the neck and looped over a belt. The Vogue Belt Co. has designed a “time belt” with a built-in pocket to hold the watch.
Many of the Gubelin watches
for women are expensively jew- *
eled, but the firm also produces tailored . models in stainless steel retailing for about $70. Sometimes the steel is combined with yellow gold to enable the piece to match both yellow and white jewelry. The line also includes costume pieces—all 18-karat gold and mostly set with precious stones-—such as clip watches to be pinned on: frocks or coats and watches set in fabulously Jeweled flower pins. » Among watches for men, the firm makes a new type of waterproof, shockproof, self-wind-ing wrist watch,
The line was demonstrated here by Mr. and Mrs. Werner Gubelin. Mr. Gubelin is one of six sons and a daughter who inherited the business from their father, and one of four sons active in the firm. Mrs. Gubelin formerly was on the advertising staff of Vogue magazine and now is American fashion co-ordinator for the company. Gubelin watches will be carried here by Charles Mayer.
