SPRINGFIELD, Ill, Aug. 23—| Mack Hellings of Burbanks, Cal! was recovering from serious head injuries here today in St. John's Hospital* after a spectacular wreck on the first lap of 100-mile AAA dirt track race Saturday. - Hellings, who was driving Anthony Granatelli's four-cylinder Offenhauser, had 60 stitches taken in his face and head. Ted Horn of Paterson, .N. J, won the race and Johnny Parsons of Van Nuys, Cal, was second. 1f was Parsons’ first big car race. He drove Ed Walsh's red No. 7 that Tommy Hinnershitz wheeled in the 500-Mile Race. Myron Fohr of Milwaukee was! third and Rex Mays of Glendale, Cal., was fourth. On the first lap of the race Emil Andres of Chicago, ran into the side of Lee Wallard's car that was skidding sidewise coming out of the last turn. Hellings came up through the dust and went over the front end of Wallard’s car. Helling's race car then went end-over-end down the main stretch near the. pits, He! “hit the cellar” and, rode the somersaulting wreckage until it came to & stop. The car was demolished.
