‘U.S. Colleges Expect 10

The survey also showed that about one-third of the some 2 million GI's, who entered college since the end of the war, are married. Of the married group at least one-half has started a family. In a fe wcases the studentfather has as many as six children, . Easier to Enroll The enroliment decrease made it easier this year for a nonservice man of woman to enroll. Most institutions reported that the new draft law will have little

college careers next year. The No. 1 reason why ex-serv-jcemen dropped out of college was the desire to take a job. The No. 2 reason, closely associated with the No. 1 reason, was financial trouble. Hundreds were dissatisfied with the amount allotted them for expenses. The No. 3 reason was the inability to adjust to college life, including the failure to maintain passing marks. The number of students who “flunked out” how ever, was no greater than the usual number of failures in prewar days. Report Political Stands Some universities reported unusual political activity among students in this national election year, while others said such activity was “disappointingly small” The survey showed no trend for any candidate. The tables do not include many of the larger institutions but the ratio of ten per cent or more reduction in GI enrollment for the fall of 1948 seems to be universal. There were a few large schodls, including Houston, Mississippi State, University of Mississippi, Pittsburgh and Catholic University of Washington, who. reported! that their peak in GI enrollment bad not been reached. The survey showed that the colleges in the Southwestern states with 44 per cent seemed to have the highest number of matried GI's in college. Next was the Southern states with 36 per cent, followed by the Western states

with 33 per cent, the Middle West-|

ern states 26 per cent, the Eastern states 22 per cent and the

New England states 16 per cent.)

Of the married students, 28,577 have at least one child. The survey indicated that on the basis of children born to GI's either béfore or while in college that there may be as many as 300,000 student-fathers.

Most all college officials re-

ported that the former service/tax

man was an excellent student, good grades and taking full advantage of his educational possibilities. Like their folks back home, they are having housing difficul-| ties but they are carrying on) ith their classroom problems— and families,
