Legion Series
Junior Tourney Scheduled Sept. 6-10
Rogers Hornsby, one of the alltime great hitters of major league baseball, will attend the American Legion’s junior world series here, Sept. 6-10, according to Dale Miller, the Legion’s Junior Baseball director. Hornsby is a likely successor
for the position Babe Ruth held|p
as consultant for the Ford Motor Company's interest in Legion Junior Baseball. The “Rajah” currently is associated with Chicago sandlot baseball and his annual schools usually attract 100,000 boys. Other Notables Hornsby is one of many baseball notables who will witness the Legion finals at Victory Field. A. B, Chandler, commissioner of baseball; Will’ Harridge, American League president; Ford Frick, National League president; George Trautman, president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues; Frank Lane, AmericaR Association president, and Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight boxing champion, all plan to visit Victory Field. Hornsby, who ‘was an active big leaguer for 23 years, held the National League batting crown seven times, six in suecession. He had a lifetime batting average of .358, second only to Ty Cobb's .367. Hornsby also is the only player to hit better than 400 for three seasons; .401 in 1922, .424 in 1924 and 403 in 1925. Title Game Postponed Meanwhile, the local National League Junior Baseball team defeated the American League, 7 to 6, yesterday in an all-star game at Riverside. The winners pounded Claude Neely, Ralph Rutan and Gene Dietz for 10 hits. Thurman Washington, a .400 hitter all season, clouted one of three homers for the Nationals. Today's scheduled inter-league championship tilt between Robi-son-Ragsdale Post and Indianapolis No. 4 has been postponed until next week.
