Either they're not convinced they are needed or the emergency is real. Or they feel there are enough reserves who haven't “caught on” in civilian life to fill training jobs. Gen. Westover thinks thousands have reached an age when they don’t like jumping in and out of uniform every few years. If Uncle Sam wants them, they want security in return. This way they sign up for three years, forego comfort, higher pay and civilian advancement. Nevertheless, Gen. Westover says reserve officers who pan out and want to stay have a good chance to remain, certainly until the world looks a lot more peaceful than now. Many reserves, says the general, want to volunteer for service in one place. Some want to go overseas with their families. Others want to stay near home and look after their businesses.
