He won the opening lead of the five of spades with the king, then led a small heart to dummy’s . king, intending to «play a small heart and pass it, i However, when West played ! the queen, Weiss went up with the ace and pitRed up the whole suit. Men and Women— Insincere Women

By ERNEST E. BLAU H, I JUST adore your hat, Gwendolyn! Yellow looks so stunning on you!” “This old thing? Do you really like it? And what have you done to your hair, Ma-

each goes her way, saying under her breath, “She looks more like an old mop every

day!” That's how it is with . women-—they often think one thing and say another. They're always acting a part. Talk or listening, they live in & little world of make-

believe. And a girl not only says what she doesn't be-

lieve—she believes ‘what she likes to hear. It's a funny thing—the way a woman swallows the same kind of flattery she dishes out. » =" » BY AND LARGE, men 1 think are more sincere--you can believe almost 50 per cent of what they say. As Roussean wrote: “A man says what he knows—a woman what will please.” Also, it might be added, what will get her what she wants. Recently a handsome and gallant burglar in. Ohio kissed the bare toe of a sleep- . ing girl and woke her up. The romance of it all got her and she promised to marry him *

She made a date to meet him in the park next day— and so to the marirage bureau: But he found the

cops waiting in the park when he got there. I mean, fellows?

‘Desire for Working Democracy Must Come From Citizens’

part of our highest legal authorities, that the law of this land shall be impartial. The President has decreed that as far as government {s concerned, both in military and civil service, there shall be no segregation and no disabilities incurred because of race or creed.

This is all that can be done by law. The real change must come in the attitude of every citizen of the United States. We hear much about democracy, but what is needed is a desire to see it in complete and full practice. We must realize that today these failures in our system of democracy are what give a handle to our enemies—who are only too ready to point out how much more democratic, for instance, are the Communist: states.
