Treasury Action | To Affect Market

NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UP)= The treasury department's announcement of higher interest rates on short-term government securities is likely to have prompt repercussions in the country’s

rates commercial banks charge for business and other loans, bankers here said today. Moreover, corporations planning to raise new capital through the sale of bonds of preferred stocks probably -will be forced to offer rates of interest higher than at present. : Bank Interest Boost The first reaction of commercial banks here to the higher short-term rates on governments probably will be a “boost in the interest rate fo 2 from 1% per cent for borrowers with the highest credit standing. Such an increase had generally been expected within the next month. Now, it may come sooner. Interest on commercial paper will probably rise also. The present commercial paper is 13% to 13 per cent, and it probably will be increased by one-eighth of 1 per cent.

Tomato Picker Dies In Truck-Car Crash

KOKOMO, Ind., Amg. 10 (UP)—

A teaspoon will hold more than a billion pollen granules, yet State Police today reported the

as few as a dozen can touch off agonized sneezes. Refugees already are starting their flight to pollen-free areas, although there are few havens in North America. Puget Sound, Wash., and western Oregon regions are free from pollen, according to O. C. Durham, chief botanist at the Dermatological Research Department of Abbott Laboratories. ' Pikes Peak, Colo. or Yellowstone National Park also have low pollen counts. Highest pollen counts in the U. 8. are recorded at Indianapolis, Madison, Wis., and Des Moines, Iowa. The Illinois Health Department says probably no town or city in the state is free from ragweed. What about the people who must remain behind?

Masks are of help at times, the

sufferer can afford it, the air of his home may be filtered, or perhaps a single room. But he must stay there most of the time. There is little benefit during sleeping hours alone since most of the pollen is inhaled during the day. There also are “shots” to bgiid up immunity, which the acadefny says is the most logical single method of management. The big objection is the lengthy treatment and the fact that some patients do not respond at all Injections started now would not bé as beneficial as those begun several months ago. New York city sprayed several thousand acres in 1946 and reports “very little or no” growth of ragweed since. To be effective, &n eradication program must be widespread since pollen can be carried 50 to 100 miles, the experts point out, > The ragweed should be de stroyed by the early part of August to prevent shedding of pollen, the Illinois Health De-
