fish and enable them to put fish “on the table.” Live bait to many anglers is minnows, worms and nightcrawlers, and possibly soft ' craws—all of which they find at a commercial bait dealers. Few of them realize that nature also provides. a number of other baits, theirs without cost and with only a few minutes exertion. Most of these are not new.
Tried and Tested
Locally this is the in-between season for catalpha worms, long a” favorite with bluegill anglers. The new crop should be along within’ a few days, appearing first in the southern part of the state. ‘The worms found in horseweeds which grow prolifically along stream banks and in many vacant lots, are also old favorites with many anglers. If you see an angler unloading what seems to be a handful of short sticks, it's a sure bet that he has cut the wormy sections of horseweeds and brought them along.
Suggests Other Worms A suggestion that anglers provide some bait and at the same time help check the bagworms, is made by Frank 'N. Wallace, state entomologist. It will take a little digging to get the worm out of its cocoon-like bag but the worm will attract bluegills and

Teach Water Safety
Approximately a thousand youngsters are learning to swim and water safety measures at Indiana ‘Dunes state park this summer under a program spon sored by the Porter County Red Cross chapter, the state ‘park division and the _state police, three members of which are serving as instructors. The training is open to persons camping at the park and to residents of the community. A similar program will be in-

remarkable record. It was achieved by a staff that had tumbled almost to minor league status in the last days’ of Mel Ott as manager. Under Durocher the Giant hurlers have turned in nine complete games of the 15 played and the club has a record of 10 wins and five losses since he became its beloved commander. Stirs Up Glants What is more, Durocher never has been considered a top-grade handler of pitchers. His greatest talent as a manager has been in playing hunches, in stirring a team up to a high pitch, something that certainly has been accomplished with the Giants. Yesterday as the hustling New Yorkers blanked the Reds for the third straight time, 5 to 0, behind the seven-hit pitching of Dave Koslo, they chalked up their 11th shutout of the season, tops for any club in the National League and second only to the 12 by the Yankees which is tops for the majors. And along with the pitching there have been other changes. Such slew-foots as Walker Cooper, Johnny Mize and 8id Gordon are stealing bases and every one on the club is running out hits like never before. Hits Grand Slam Homer In yesterday's triumph Cooper didn’t steal any bases but he got a grand slam homer in the first inning, insuring KXoslo's
sixth victory and his third shutout. By winning, the Giants took over third place undisputedly. The Braves made it three in a row over the Pirates, winning, 2 to. 1, at Boston on the seven-hit

By CARL LUNDQUIST, United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, July 30—There are more goose eggs being laid on the Polo Grounds scoreboard these days than in the Bronx Zoo, a most phenomenal ‘situation inasmuch as the Giant pitching staff, considered the worst in baseball, is responsible.
