U. S. Court Clears 23 Farben Chiefs

Nihe Held Guilty

Of War Plundering

NUERNBERG, July 29 (UP)— Twenty-three executives of the I. G. Farben chemical cartel were acquitted today of criminal responsibility on charges of helping Hitler to plan and wage aggressive war. However, nine of the executives were convicted of plundering the chemical industries in countries overrun by the Nazis. Presiding Judge Curtis Shake, Vincennes, Ind., who announced the 23 acquittals, said that Hitler's plans for aggressive war or attacks on individual countries were not commonly known in yi “It was a secret plan,” Shake said, “and none of the Farben officials were in on it.” Where to Draw Line A three-man American war crimes tribunal conceded the defendants participated in the war. But they were charged only with conspiracy to wage war.

If we lower the standard of participation to include them, it is difficult to find a logical place to draw a line between the guilty and innocent among the great mass of the German people.” The 23 Farben defendants also were acquitted last Apr, 22 on charges of industrial plundering, conspiracy against humanity and war crimes.

Her attorney said he would file certified copies of a 1936 Ohio felony conviction for forgery against Hanna.

Poker Player Slain By Shotgun Blast

Grudge Believed Motive of Killers

CHICAGO, July 29 (UP)—De-

Owen, seated beside his father, was unhurt. The killer's car swung into traffic. Policeman James Webster, driving in front of Mr. Gumbin's car, chased the assassins but was outdistanced. Big "Poker Player Coroner A. L. Brodie learned that Mr. Gumbin played highstake poker with friends and business acquaintances. His wife, the former Blossom Bath of Austin, Tex. said he had lost as much as $3500 in a single evening. Police were seeking to learn whether he had ever played against any of Chicago's bigtime

with the underworld “syndicate.” If so, Coroner Brodie said, Mr. Gumbin may have been fleeced on a crooked deal and refused to pay, resulting in his murder. The Chicago Sun and Times, in a copyrighted story, said it was] “informed” that Mr. Gumbin probably was slain by the syndicate—but not because of gambling. d The newspaper said it learned Mr. Gumbin was in the grip of the underworld’s labor racketeers

professional gamblers connected)

who were extorting huge sums| from him to “insure” labor peace at his plant. The syndicate has been losing revenue because of recent police “heat” on gambling. As result, the hoodlums may have tried to raise their “protection” fees. If Mr, Gumbin refused to pay, he may have been killed as a lesson to other “clients,” the paper said. Detectives also were checking whether Mr. Gumbin was involved in gray market operations during the current paper short-

age. Besides Owen, the Gumbins
