Men of the Soil Well Represented
The United States y is the most fabulous indus economy the world has ever known—but as little as 75 years ago it was} largely’ a nation of farmers. Study the signatures on the

the Freedom Train and you'll see that most of them belonged to men who wrested their Hvelihood from the soil,
In M91 Samuel Slater raised c
his first spinning mill. In 1793 Eli Whitney assembled his cotton gin, and later introduced standardized tool parts. And by 1802 Z.merica had steam engines as good as England's. Those were the beginnings and mill after mill appeared in New England, which by this time had acquired the aspects of a settled country and offered enough manpower—and by the grace of nature, waterpower—to operate the spindles. Finances Were Unstable The greatest detriment to business expansion following the Revolution was the unstable financial situation. There was no uniform currency of settled value and banking facilities were virtually nonexistent. Alexander Hamilton, prevailed, however, and Congress established the First Bank of the United States in 1791.

of the American Federation of Musicians. Their services were offered in the federation’s Music Appreciation program.
The bank served the federal government and private, business and circulated a stable”currency. For 20 years it prospered. Popular opinion opposed the institution, however (the people thought the bank was too powerful for a democracy), and in 1811 it had
to close its doors when Congress failed to renew its charter. 4
Second Bank Founded
After five years of financial chaos, Congress, in 1816, was forced to establish a second Bank | of thé United States. But bank| two went the way of bank one when its avowed enemy, Andrew Jackson, was able to kill it in| 1836. In 1840 an independent | treasury system was created, and} this offered a degree of monetary security. A growing network of canals and the introduction of the steam railway in the 1830's gave business a. terrific impulse by converting the cost of freight from dollars to cents, Reaper Was Factor Another invention that accelerated American Business was the invention of the grain reaper in 1833. This machine multiplied the yield of agriculture. In 1860, the value of U. 8S. machine and hand manufacturers, including mines and fisheries, was estimated at $1,900,003,000, a sum double the 1850 figure. Some 5,000,000 immigrants arrived in the United States in the first half of the 19th century to give the factories the manpower it badly needed. Land was getting harder to obtain cheaply, and as a consequence most of the immigrants settled in the towns. Many Americans were also moving to urban districts, 80 the decade of 1850 was marked by the growth of cities.
