-{that our exports to the Soviets { will increase some in the months
months. An indication of what is happening in our trade with Russia is shown by comparing May, 1947, figures with May, 1948—the latest compiled by the census bureau. In May, 1947, we shipped $27 million worth of goods to Russia. In May of this year our exports to Russia amounted to only $204,‘000, with about half of that being for such miscellaneou# items as household equipment, books and
pamphlets. ‘Up To $7.6 Million In May, 1947, we imported
nearly $4% million worth of Russian goods, Last May our imports from Russia were up to $7.6 million, with $5 million being for furs. Russia received only $65,000 worth of our machinery in May, In the past she received millions of dollars worth each month. As a result of our tightened controls the balance of trade stands in Russia's favor for the first five months of this year. She has shipped us $28 million worth of goods while we have sent her $25 million, with the bulk of that moving before the complete controls became effective April 6. Commerce Department officials say there is no intention of cutting off trade with Russia and
ahead as our licensing machinery begins to operate more smoothly. But they art not expected to get close to pre- rol levels.
