Tank Is Valuable Addition To Hot Water Heater

Method Before It ‘Enters Heater

By HUBBARY) COBB, Your Handy Man

We, as a nation, are pretty

hot-water happy. If you don't be-

lieve so, try to remember ‘what you did the last time you shuddered

under a hot shower that wasn’t warm water. Now hot wrsater is

hot or tried to shave with lukea fine and wonderful thing but in

many homes there never seems to be quite enough of it on hand, and if there were it wrwld cost téo much. Now, one way to solve

both these problems is to install a tempering tank to pre-heat the cold water.

A tempering tank is just a plain

because the warmer you get the |water in this tank the less gas or electricity will be required to bring it up to 140 degrees F. One thing you won’t want to do is two insulate this tempering tank because this would spoil everything {and the water inside would refmain at about the same tempera{ture it was when it came in.

oil burner. He selects a certain type or brand because he's seen it advertised, because his brother-in-law says it's no good, or because his wife likes the color, or the way the salesman parts his hair. Now there are good chances that

will get a good heating plant for his money, but before he signs over his life he should ask, in a small voice, “who does the servicing for this equipment and how?”

Oil burners, automatic washing

machines, and all those other complicated gadgets are bound to get out of order and parts will in time need replacing. This is where servicing comes in handy. Now good servicing means, in our opinion, coming to find out what {is * wrong within a reasonable {length of time, and having the necessary repair parts on hand or at least nearby. In short, you've got to have someone around who can find out what needs to be got and then go out and get it. No machine is worth a nickel if there aren't trained men around to fix it, and replacement parts around for last year's model. Now finding out how well the service end of an organization holds up is not so easy. About the best thing you can do is get the names and addresses of other home owners with similar equipiment and then call them up an ask how things go. :

How to Remove Paint

if it’s worth the effort. For example, we went to a great deal of time, effort, and even expense to

ney from the bottom up—but who

really care about knowing? They care about things like how to remove paint from bronze screening. As a matter of fact, this can be done by brushing a liquid paint remover over the screen, allowing, it to act for a few minutes and; then brushing it off with a brush. But have some sort of metal backing to prevent the screening from'getting pushed out of kilter. Another thing people would like to know is how to remove dog stains ' from and carpets. Well, if the stain is fresh try a half and half solution of vinegar and water. You have to -work

There are a few persons who desire information on the method of painting over wood shingles that were previously treated with a creosote stain. What these people will have to do is give the shingles a coat of aluminum paint. This will act as a seal and prevent the creosote from bleeding through the oil paint.

Heavy Object Can Crack Porcelain

Maybe you fall into a somewhat higher income bracket than we happen to be in, but when we go out to buy a piece of bathroom or

have it around for at least a month or two, or until a new model comes out. “Now most of your kitchen stoves, sinks, refrigerators, bathtubs, and washbasins are steel with a baked enamel finish. Toilet bowls and flush tanks are usually porcelain. Drop a heavy object on that baked enamel and the chances are that the finish will

|

*lchip off. You can get a special

patching enamel to fix some of these spots but if the patch will be subject to standing water there is not much you can do about it. Drop that same heavy object on porcelain and it will crack. Sometimes the cracks can be patched but sometimes they can’t. One good way to crack a porcelain toilet bowl is to pour hot water into it when trying to thaw a frozen sewer line. ) Baked enamel is hard but it can be scratched and it can be stained. Scratching can be accomplished by using an abrasive type of cleaning powder, pushing heavy cooking utensils over the surface, cleaning the fixture while wearing a diamond ring or standing on the enamel with shoes on. .Once the surface is scratched it's not going to look nice and it's going to be tough to clean.

From Bronze Screening Baked enamel is very resistant There comes a time in this|!C Staining but if you work things racket when one begins to wonder|Ti8ht it can be stained for keeps.

Electrical Appliances

‘Are Not Unbreak@ble

There are any number of perfectly useless things in this world but few are of as little value as an electrical appli ance that doesn’t work. And to make matters worse, the who think up electrical gadgets have got so far ahead of the rest of us that when the electric iron or toaster fails to function there isn"t much you can do except take it down to an electric shop amd hope they haye it fixed by next November. The only other thing you can do is try not to let the appliance get busted in the first place.

Nothing will put an electrical appliance out of whack quicker than to be tossed on the floor, sink, or someone’s head. This will break the delicate heating element and there won’t be any heat. Another good way to ruin an appli-| ance is to dump it in a sink of water so that the electrical ele-| ment gets wet. Water down in here will soak into the insulation and maybe cause a short circuit and things like that. There are still a lot of people who like to disconnect an appliance by giving the appliance plug a hard yank. This trick causes pretty sparks to fly around the contact prongs of the appliance and these little sparks can, in time, pit the metal prongs so that you can't get a good electrical contact. The-way to get around this is to pull out the wall plug first and then remove the appliance plug. An even better trick is to have a switch installed on the cord so that current to the appliance can be turned off before the plug is removed.

The first thing you have to do here, after the floor is clean, is to mix a grout of cement and water to the consistency of paint and brush this over the entire floor surface. Before this grout gets hard, mix up one part cement and three parts sand with enough water added to get a workable plastic and spread this over the grout. This should be about %- inch thick and must, of course, be of an equal thickness over the entire floor area. By the way, don’t mix up more of this mortar than can be covered with tile in 30 minutes. Once the mortar is on, dust it with dry Portland cement and then place the tiles in position. The tiles should be damp before they are set in place. Be sure to get each tile perfectly level and leave a little crack beAfter the tiles are all down and the mortar has set, fill these cracks with a cement mortar and then wipe the tiles clean before the splatterings of mortar get hard. After you've done all this you have a tile floor.

In Mixing Concrete

Maybe one of the reasons why many people never get to do any concrete work around the place is that most of the mixing proportions for concrete read like a recipe for feeding an army. Any-

When the gravel is blended in with the sang and cement, you add the and keep mixing until your back gets tired or all tHe particles gp covered with a cement paste, You now have concrete. Be sure that the sand, and water are all clean. Yoy can get washed sand and gravel at most building supply outfits, Usually the water you drink is pure enough for concrete,
