Bridge—
_.:. By LOUISE FLETCHER, Times Woman's Editor . NEW YORK, July 21—The fashion business has its
puzzling aspects. One of the most puzzling is the process that makes all of a given season's style ingredients blend
and jell. From top to toe, from girdle to gown, the parts of a °
costume have got {0 complement each other if they're going to compliment their wearer.
Now the dress designers, before they introduce a collection, .
are supposed to work in hush-hush secrecy that would do credit to the State Department. No one, but no one, is to have a hint of silhouet, fabric and color until, with fanfare, they raise the curtain on a new season's clothes. Well, there must be some leaks in their security system. Because—at the very minute the dress designers hoist the curtain on their fashion stars—the milliners, the shoemakers, the accessory producers, even the lingerie manufacturers, are right on stage with a supporting cast to round out the production. Maybe the milliners, et al, are clairyoyant.
Milliners Use Rich Fabrics, Smoky Colors
To Create Partners for Fall Costumes How else account for the fact that hats, seen this morning at a Millinery Fashion Bureau breakfast, are perfect partners for dress designers’ fall and winter costumes? How did. milliners know ahead of time that the new clothes would call for little / b hats? That they'd have to be simple in line but rich in fabric? That fine details
and discreet s “would be in order? Hats off to milliners. They + knew,
Most hats shown were designed for short hairdos. Hattie Carnegie makes small berets and turbans for cropped tresses. Peg Fischer does a little bullseye cloche (pictured) of tangerine felt and black mat jersey. Little caps, hel-met-bonnets and berets are among the Florence Reichman hats. Lilly Dache makes smallish draped cloches, some in suede. ‘All of the milliners seem to have known in advance that Victorian colors and lines would be just the ticket. The shoe people are in step, too. Yesterday, the Guild of Better Shoe
styles for out-of-town fashion writers here for the New York Dress Institute’s semi-annual press week. Their shoes, like many dress designers’ creations, are based on turn-of-the-century themes. There are 1948 revivals, slim and trim, of spats, ribbon ties, satin evening slippers with curved heels, strapped and buttoned models and two-tone combinations.
Yolande Revives Chemise for Wear
Under Narrow Skirts, Fitted Gowns As for the lingerie makers, they're doing some neat undercover work. One firm, Yolande, revives the chemise to be worn (That keeps the lingerie above see level.) The Barbizon people introduce a new nylon-rayon fabric to make their body-contour slips fit even more sleekly under molded fall fashions. Hosiery is in the parade with new tones to go with falks smoky colors. Gotham’s newest is a soft, deep neutral, probably more gray than beige, The six dress houses on the NYDI schedule yesterday were Ben Reig, Anna Miller, Samuel Kass, Capri, Kiviette and Nettie Rosenstef. At Reig’s there's a variety of silhouets from slim to full-skirted. One, called “tailspin,” has a slender skirt which breaks into concentrated fullness at back. Other slim skirts, as in the pagoda peplum suit in the photo, are blackwrapped. A pencil slim skirt goes with a loose box jacket of broadtall. RAE : Among flaring skirts is one with a Watteau drape. In this, the sides of the skirt are hitched up and anchored back of the knees. It gives, from front view, a low-placed pegtop effect. Both high-waisted Directore and Victorian basque effects appear in the line, done in fabulous fabrics and with intricate detailing.
Novel Collar Details Take ight
In Samuel Kass' Fall and Winter Line ; ‘Collars take the spotlight in the Samuel Kass collection. A suit jacket has a wide, shallow sailor collar, Another has a double collar, the top layer jutting out in wing points. There's even a small turndown collar of black taffeta above the lace bosom of a black taffeta evening dress. Other highlights here are contour belted jackets and Yistorian jet and embroidery on dav rown suits, oy ax A

Lightning Shock Is Rare

His family decided that he needed medicine “to drive the lightning out,” so he and his mother walked 50 miles in two days to the doctor! Although the danger of being struck by lightning is small in the first place, there are a few worthwhile precautions which can be. taken which decrease the chance of being struck. A golfer using an umbrella in a thundershower takes a greater risk than if he got wet. Another precaution is not to take shelter under a tree during a| thunderstorm. By JEAN THE HIGH COST of living, 1948 brand, spares no one. You teeners meet up with it every ‘time you go shopping. And when you go on dates! Fortunately, plenty of summer fun is relatively painless— financially speaking. There are municipal bathing - pools and city and state parks where you can play or picnic for free. Still, a boy with a steady date can get rid of a lot of folding lettuce in a mighty short time. A How does your garden grow, squire? Are you busted? NO use being shy about money matters, these days.
