Doctors Learn Health Of Muscles by Sounds

Northwestern Develops ‘Nerve’ Machine

~ That Tells Story on Sound or Silent Screen

By JANE STAFFORD, Science Service Medical Writer NEW YORK, July 19—Doctors can now tell by the sound a muscle makes when it contracts whether it is paralyzed, getting better or normal. : If it clicks, the muscle is in bad shape. If it makes a deep-toned “glup-giup,” it is healthy. Sounds in between the click and the blup tell when the nerve of a polio patient is regenerating and the muscle

Soming back to normal function the machine turned on. The doctor then can both see and hear what the muscle is doing as it contracts,

In cases of paralyzed muscle, an electric stimulator to the nerve is used. This is just placed on the skin surface over the muscle being tested. The stimulator tells whether the nerve fibers have come down to the muscle, The machine used without the stimulator tells whether the impulses are getting to the muscles. Epidemic Sweeps Carolina The machine is being used for diagnosis in war veterans and other patients with peripheral nerve injuries as well as {or polio victims. North Carolina, now in the

8. The machine that lets the muscle tell its story in sound as well as on a silent screen was developed at Northwestern University’'s department of nervous and mental diseases. It was shown at the First International Poliomyelitis Conference here by Dr. L. J. Pollock, head of the department, and Dr. Alex J. Arieif. Stuck Into Muscles Called an electromyograph, the machine is similar to the electrocardiograph which picks up electric potentials from the heart and the electroencephalograph which picks up potentials from the brain, popularly called brain waves, . Tiny needle electrodes are stuck

Court Fight Looms

Over Landis Estate

HOLLYWOOD, July 19 (UP)— A court battle appeared likely today over a property settlement involving the estate of Actress Carole Landis, who died July 5 of an overdose of sleeping tablets. Miss Landis’ husband, Horace Schmidlapp, had signed a settlement awarding her $30,000. The actress died the day before she was to have signed the agreement. Mr. Schmidlapp contends the settlement was: invalidated by Miss Landis’ failure to sign it. Attorney Jerry Giesler is attempting to collect the funds on behalf of the estate.’ The actress’ mother, Mrs. Clara Landis, was named principal beneficiary in the will
