By JEAN TABBERT INTERESTED IN government since she was a girl in Massachusetts, Mrs. Arthur G. Medlicott handles the presidency of the Indianapolis League of Women Voters as naturally as though she'd always done it . . . and as effi-

ciently as she handles her household at 5879 N., New Jersey St.

The homemaking is for her husband, who is with the research department. of the Real Silk Hosiery Mills, and their son, William, at home from Purdue University for the summer. The Medlicotts’ daughter,

Betsy, is now Mrs. Richard Coulter and lives in Indianapolis, too.

Florence Medlicott can always remember someone in her early childhood who was interested in government. “Members of my family or friends always seemed to be attending a PTA meeting or a political session,” she recalls. Mrs. Medlicott, who thinks good government begins with youth, did “Scouting” for years until her children grew up. She's also a member of the Wellesley Club, the Fortnightly Literary Club and the Govern-

terest in the problems. Specific groups in the league study the Health and Hospitals Department; phases of the child welfare program; the juvenile court; adoption laws; care of dependent children, and city recreation facilities. Mrs. Medlicott says, “The league is a non-partisan organization to promote citizen responsibility. It works for good legislation-—on local, state and national levels—and the education of the general public. The national ‘program even extends into the international field, for the league backs international reconstruction, expansion of world trade and strengthening of the United Nations, " nn » “BUT THE league is only a watchdog; it has no other she emphasizes. The “watchdog” policy pays off, too. It helped here, for instance, to bring about equal pay for equal service in the city government. The erganization has two general meetings each month. One is in the morning; the other, which husbands may attend, at night. There specialists are invited to speak at panel discussions along with

city’s financial

| league members themselves.

Mrs. Medlicott has special interests as president. She wants to develop potential leaders in the organization while she is serving as spokesman and representative of the board. “And that's all T am,” she says.

| “The board$ not the president, The matron of honor, Mrs.| is the policy-forming unit.”

It’s principally the president who is supposed to find ways to make the league program effective. That's where hard work, the part unnoticed by the casual observer, comes in. And that's where Mrs. Arthur Medlcott shines. ‘
