Desperation, Despair
LIFE HAS become so complex I don’t know where to turn. I'm a man of 46, not ignorant, not learned, not poor, not rich, just average. I was married many years to a fine woman. She died six years ago and left me and our son, 13, alone in the world. We both missed her terribly for a while, but time seems to heal many hurts.
Three years ago I met a lovely widow, my age, with a beautiful daughter, 14. Maybe it was the parallel of our lives that caused us to become closely united and decide to marry, We were blissfully happy for a long while. Life had begun anew for all four of us. I have no sensible explanation to offer, to you or to myself, for what transpired. My son and stepdaughter, after they matured, made it fairly obvious that they were carrying on an affair that went beyond the limitations of brother and sister love. Heaven knows how it came about, but I found myself enamored with my wife's daughter also. She was such a sweet child, but grew into a beautiful woman whom I was unable to resist, Now, fo climax the whole ugly mess, this week my wife came to me in a flood of tears to tell me she has been intimate with my son on numerous occasions when I was out of town on business. She asks my forgiveness and says she really loves me. As a result of being involved in this whirlpool I have lost my health and may lose my job, and I firmly believe I'm going insane. I love my wife and want to keep her, but I believe now I'm in love with my stepdaughter. My son, of course, I love and don’t want him to be hurt. Please advise me and I'll be in your debt forever. A.D L The first big problem confronting you in two fortunate is getting you down. Meet it, don’t muff it. Open your house to your adult friends and to your children’s young friends. You'll notice how poorly you fit in with people half your age and how bored you actually are with them. Try a few of thelr dance steps if you don’t believe me. Young people want their parents youthful but most of all they want “parents.” Lend a hand to your will power. Urge your son and stepdaughter to go to college or work, away from home and away from each other. Marriage takes effort, every day, and right now yours needs ft. You can understand and forgive your wife because she wants what you're grasping for—prolonged youth. Give her attention landing and soon you'll begin life anew, for the second time. You love each other, and you revolt at even considering loving anyone else. Get your thrills normally—from + letters to “Dear Mother and Dad.”

N e's Big, but Not Sloppy
TO THE TWO ladies who objeet to fat, sloppy men—I have a husband weighing 200 pounds and he is far from sloppy. I'm a bride of two months and have found out that a husband needs encouragement in anything he does. How your people can get into such uncalled for circumstances is beyond me. 3 * T know that tolerance is one of the many factors in marriage. My parents were married almost 50 years and I've seen my mother at her wits end too many times to count—but my father didn’t know it. I'm not saying I won't have problems as my marriage stretches into years, but there should be solutions. If women would stop and think of the situations they put themselves into without reasoning there wouldn't be so many heartbreaks and downfalls of either sex. | OUT-OF-TOWN READER.
That was prize advice your mother passed on to you. Remind yourself every day not to let your husband think you'd let your

Utopia’s Here For Farmers | With Wheat
U. S. Support Policy
By EARL RICHERT
you've never believed Utopia was possible? Consider then the case of America’'s 1,200,000 wheat farmers.
they're now harvesting the second largest crop on record and there's no way for them to lose money on ft. That's because wheat prices at the start of the marketing season are down to the high government floors. If they move at all within the next year) there is no way for them to go eonpt up. And thé nice thing about the government-pegged prices is that they're high enough to assure a comfortable profit. The governmendfMixed price averages $2 a bushel on the farm and $2.29 a bushel at the Chicago terminal market—18 cents a bushel above last year's floors. The 1935-39 average price was 83 cents a bushel. . Can Make Good Profit Agriculture Department ex{perts say that with today’s {mechanization and any sort of yield farmers can make a good profit at $2 a bushel. With this sort of “cinch” deal, {wheat-belt farmers are now going {to their -local agriculture depart- | ment offices in droves and ar{ranging for government loans. Under these loan deals, the wheat owner gets $2 a bushel now for his wheat—more if it has reached a terminal market. He
he repays the government and sells the wheat at the higher price, He can’t lose so long as he gets enough more to pay 3 per cent interest on the loan—usually made by a bank. and guaranteed by the government. If prices don’t go up, he simply {turns the wheat over to the government. U. 8. to Own Plenty T. B. Walker of the Agriculture Department's grain branch said wheat loans now were being made at a rate unequalled since pre-war years. Then, only those farmers who kept their wheat acreage within limits fixed by the government were eligible for the loans. Now there is no restriction on acreage and all wheat farmers are eligible, ° With a wheat crop this year now estimated at “1,242,000,000 bushels, Agriculture Department experts think the U, 8. will have enough wheat to say to the world:

Flexible Schedules an ‘Happy Babias
In recent years, most pediatricians and psychologists urged mothers to start babies on fixed ischedules. Nap and bedtime should not vary. Mealtimes should be carefully planned to fall at the same hours each day. Every aspect of the infant's entire life was plotted out and a plan developed. A “good” mother was one who followed the schedule. But individuals—even infant individuals—differ. One may need more sleep than the usuad child. Another gets very irritated if he isn’t fed when he is hungry. There
}
differences. | Of late, however, there seems to be more and more evidence that some of the “old-fashioned” ideas were better, It's only good common sense to feed the baby whea he is hungry and not before, and to put him to bed when he is sleepy and not when he is full of life. This youngster will be good natured, not irritable—the really happy child.
parent, sensing the needs of her baby and meeting those needs when they arise, is today’s ‘‘good” mother.

By Science Service HARTFORD, Conn, July 12— Guinea pigs can be trained to go into a prolonged hypnotic. trance, reports Dr, W. T.
