Inside Indianapolis

TOUCHING the hand of Howard J. Lacy II is like touching a high wire. You know you've made contact with a bundle of energy. He's the 210-pound president and treasurer of the U. 8. Corrugated Fibre Box Co. who still has the broad shoulders he developed as .a Culver tackle and would pass any day for a trim-hipped heavyweight champion. He bristles with energy. e a well-cut gem, he has many facets, flas interests in many directions. depending upon how you see him. He hunts, fishes, travels —but his real love is boxes, corrugated and aircushioned to get breakable merchandise from producer to consumer safely. To say he makes boxes is over-simplifying it. He really manufactures air cushions for shipping anything from crystal to eggs to fragile furniture. His father started the fibre box business in Pearl St. in 1912, After his education at Culver, he took business courses and enough mechanical engineering to equip him for his first grapple with business. It happened to be the handle of a coal shovel in his father’s plant, they moved to Roosevelt and Martindale. He unloaded coal and: rolls of paper weighing about a ton. Heavy work for a youngster but it made muscle, and he still has it. His father gave him 25 cents an hour for 10 hours a day. That was in 1924.

Wrote Own Selling Rules

HIS WISE FATHER, taking him into the business through the basement, so to speak, offered him no "easy chair, mahogany desk and dictaphone. His next job was as a helper on the corrugating machines. He caught the sheets behind the corrugator. In the trade they call the job “off bearing.” Later his father let him operate the machines, gave, him a hitch in the sample room, then turned ‘him loose on the road as a cub salesman, And a salesman he is today, one of the best. He wrote his own selling rules. His No. 1 rule is to know your product. “In our business you have to visualize the prospect,” he says. ‘For example, packing a set of B54 fragile dishes of assorted sizes in a box presents a different problem from packing a desk. We have to know where the weak spots are, and the torques. We make air cushions with paper to protect them. His second rule is to let the customer know you want to do something for him other than to separate him from his money. And No. 3—don't forget to ask him for his order just as soon ag you have finished the selling talk, the sooner the better while your points are fresh in his mind. \ His product still has the fascination for him of an electric train on a Christmas morning He likes to create new products to fit the needs of new customers. “A package,” he explains, “must be more than attractive. It must be safe and easy to pack, a labor-saver, A carton is not an outside container, it is a component, air-cushioned:- In packing a desk, for instance, the whole desk is literally suspended In air. We make the corrugated air cushions to fit, cut holes m them for the legs.” Glass manufacturers use 25 per cent of all of the corrugated cartons in this country. Eggs are another big item. The U. 8, Corrugated Fibre Box Co. makes millions of egg crates, ship them by the carload to co-ops who pass them on to the farmers knocked down. “We have a new egg crate, easier to assemble with stronger support in the center. They can stack them higher in the railroad cars.” There are six plants in the Lacy packaging emapive, in Indianapolis, Dayton, Buffalo, Knox,
