Gland Trouble Slim Excuse For Obesity, Scientist Says

Dietary Measures, Re-education of Poor

Food Habits Called Only True Solution

By ARTHUR J. SNIDER, Times Special Writer CHICAGO, July 8—An endocrinologist who has seen women fnelt poundage in an amazingly short time by “re-educating the appetite” contends glandular trouble is a slim excuse for obesity. Dr. Marguerite M. Kunde of Northwestern University says too many overweight persons have the false idea that some specific indocrine glandular deficiency is at the bottom of their problem.

“This causés them to seek needless hormone therapy,” Dr. Kunde says. {Yet no hormones or gland produdts known to thera{peutics at this time are helpful, |except where the thyroid is in-

{ volved. | “The only true solutions are | dietary measures and. re-eduica-

tions, she described 50 random cases that had been referred to the clinic because they could not lose weight, : S6me had tried drugs, and others had been on low calorie diets without success and, thus were suspected of having glandular disfunction. Instead of giving them hormonal products! Dr. Kunde placed them on a special type of diet that did not require them to go hungry at any time. Eat All they Want

high protein, low fat and low carbohydrate foods. Patients were allowed to eat as much as they wanted fo except they were permitted no sweets ‘or concentrated starches. : ! Weight losses ranged from 12 pounds to 117 pounds, depending on the initial body weight and the length of time the patient continued the diet. The 117-pound-loss was that of a woman with a so-called familial tendency to obesity. She weighed 106 pounds at 3 years of age, 250 pounds at age 8 and came to the clinic at 30 weighing 315 pounds. She dropped 117 pounds in 16 months on the diet alone. A woman, 19, lost 24 pounds in five months. Another, 38, who had | failed previously to reduce on thyroid treatment, lost 64 pounds in 16 months. A woman, 55, ‘went from 201 to 142 in 20 months. The group include all types described in the textbooks of endocrinology. There were those with thy “girdle” type .of obesity; the hypogonad group with excessive fat on the thighs; the type with enormous parative slender legs and the “Buffalo” type, where the weight is confined to the face, neck, chest and abdomen.
