The two parts of the brain are the “new brain” and the “old brain.” The new brain, from the standpoint of evolution, is the thinking part of man’s brain, the cerebral hemispheres. Below them lies a stalk, usually called the “brain stem.” This is the old brain. An important part of the old brain is a tiny patch not much larger than a 25-cent piece known as the hypothalamus. Researches have demonstrated that it is a control center for the nerves that go to the heart, lung, and other vital organs of the body. Developed Ulcers Many years ago, Dr. Harvey Cushing, the great pioneer in brain surgery, showed that when damage occurred to the hypothalamus in dogs, the animals developed ulcers in their stomachs, More recent studies, Dr. Thomas reported,. have shown that there are two-way paths connecting the cerebral hémispheres and the hypothalamus. Nervous impulses can go from the new brain to the old or in the opposite direction. Emotional expression, it is now generally agreed, can be a condi-
be something immediately present in the environmeft or some-
It is easy to.see how the remembered stimulus, sending impulses to the hypothalamus can build up a “ rberating circuit” so that strong impulses go from the hypothalamus by way of the autonomic nerves to the heart, the lungs, the stomach, the intestines, etc.

Tests in Humidity and Heat Tell Just When to Sweat
One Patient Perspires in 15-Minute Cycles As Though He Had an Inlaid Thermostat
By Science Service NEW ORLEANS, July 8—When the temperature gets up to 93.2 degrees Fahrenheit, with relative humidity at 50 per cent, a normal person will start sweating even when resting quietly in bed. This threshold level for sweating, all too familiar these hot days and nights, was determined in scientific measurements reported by Dr. G. E. Burch of Tulane University. In one patient sweating went in cycles. It alternately occurred) and stopped at 15-minute intervals, even though conditions in thes room remained the same. Apparently sweating cooled the man enough to abolish the need for this natural cooling mechanism for a cerfain length of time. Grow ‘Irritated’ “He accumulated heat, sweated again, copled his body, and then stopped sweating,” Dr, Burch explains. This cyclic sweating conserves water and electrolytes, such as salt, that are lost from the body in sweat. The studies were made in an air conditioned room.
