Ray Bauduc and Bobcats Score A New Hit With ‘Sugar’ and ‘Liza’
‘Just for Now,’ ‘Everybody Loves Somebody’
By Frank Sinatra Is Little Less Torrid By DONNA MIKELS
Maybe the weather's too hot
Bauduc and his Bobcats offer something special in their Capitol]
recording of “When My Sugar Walks Down the Street” and “Lil
Liza Jane.”
3's in a strictly simple rucky-tuck style that makes it a jazz classic. Furthermore, this release marks the first time Drummer-
man Bauduc ever has“sung ‘on a
record.
“Sugar” and “Liza” are both,
old standards which haven't been
revived recently. However, “Liza” |
is brought up to date with new, lyrics. The all-star lineup backing Baudue includes Eddie Miller, |
tenor sax; Matty Matlock, clari-|
net; Nate Kazebier, trumpet, and Brad Gowans, valve trombone. This won’t be a best-seller, but it's good. For something a little less torrid, try listening to Frank Sina-
tra’s “Just For Now” and “Every-|
body Loves Somebody.” Ang, not a new release but still one of the best of the popular crop, “Love Somebody” by Buddy Clark and Doris Day. Other new include: RCA VICTOR — Like a good march tune? Take your pick

from “Band Marches by Spring

Loucks. ‘The selections include “Hands Across the Sea,” “From Tropic. to Tropic,” “Sabre and Spurs,” “Grandioso,” “March ‘The Southerner’,” “Fearless,” “Gladiator March” and “Purple Pageant.” The old bluesy “Baby All the Time” is one of the best jazz vein tunes by Tommy Dorsey in recent months. Lucy Polk sings it. Flip is “Judalene,” a ballad sung by Stuart Foster, ' As informal as the credit on it is “You Came a Long Way” by “Ray McKinley and Some of the Boys.” Ray sings the calypso vocal. Becond side is a Marcy Lutes vocal oh “For Heaven's Sake.” Hoosier Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers satisfy with their treat-

Lush describes the Tony Martin version of “Music From Beyond the Moon” and “If I Had You.” { COLUMBIA —Dick Jurgens always had a way with a novelty. His newest releases turn “Mississippt Mud” into a novelty vehicle for a Jimmy Castle vocal, while the flip features the same vocalist on “Kiss-Kiss-Kissin’ in the Corn.” You either like Cab Calloway) or you don't. Those who don’t will like “Calloway Boogie” as little as any of his tunes because it’s in typical hi-de-ho fashion. But it’s bound to click with those who like Cab’s groovy interpretations. Flip is another novelty, “Two Blocks Down,” a semitakeoff of the old “Between 18th and 19th on Chestnut St,” hit. Another old favorite, Pearl

Mrs. W. B. Sarber has been elected president of the Mark Twain Association of Indiana,

Mary Susan Singer, a member of the New York chapter, organized the local group in 1946. Its purpose is to perpetuate the works of Mark Twain, noted hu-|2 morist. The . Indiana organization recently donated a substantial sum to a fund for the establishment of a Mark Twain Chair of Literature at the University of California.
Miller Trombone Eyed by Fans
Because so many columnists have made nbte of the fact that Glen Miller's trombone is never absent from the stand when Tex Beneke's orchestra performs, souvenir hunters have made life pandemonium for the Beneke bandsmen. Jimmy Priddy only re-| cently had a trombone recovered by police from a fan who snitched it while Jimmy was off the stand. Actually Glenn’s trombone is always kept with the band’s baggage backstage now, to avoid the possibility of theft by an overlyavid Miller fan.

Mr. Janus, managing director of Eximport Associates, Inc, a Chicago importing firm, said he probably would use the car himself until he can get a new American model. He has been ‘waiting 18 months for one. Too Much Car He admitted the big limousine was too much car for him. But he planned to drive it back to his home in Winnetka, Ill. He said he hoped to leave either today or tomorrow. The car was designed by Hitler. It has a 230 horsepower engine and a top speed of 135 miles an hour. It also uses a gallon of gasoline every seven miles and has five forward speeds. “The dashboard looks like an airplane instrument panel,” Mr. Janus said. “And the bulletproof glass is one and a quarter inches thick. “It's proof that bullet-proof glass, armorplate and iron curtains are no protection for dic-
