Berlin Crisis. Gives Britain
Case of Jitters
People on _ Street Wonder ‘When’
By WILLIAM McGAFFIN Foreign Corresponaens
Times LONDON, June 29 — Britain suddenly’ has developed a case of war jitters. : Cricket at Lords and tennis at wimbledon—those are the domi-| nating subjects you hear when eavesdropping around London. But a new theme has leapt in this t week which was not here when I came back to England two months ago. Sample conversations: Barber to manicurist: “Well, I guess you'll be back driving an ambulance again one of these days.” _ Young businessman, half jokingly, half seriously: “Suppose I'll be getting my call-up papers any day now.” Old man with an eye on a squadron of jet fighters exercising over London: “Looks as though we might have to send those over Berlin.” Right So Often Winston Churchill's sensational warning oyer the weekend, followed Foreign Secretary Bevin's typically British understatement, “A delicate state of affairs” exists in Berlin.” : Mr. Churchill has been right so often in the past that people sit up
and take notice when he bluntly}
asserts that Russia, by its actions in Berlin, has raised issues as grave as those at Munich 10 years ago. : Many people, alarmed by the headlines out of Berlin, were thinking grave thoughts even before. Mr. Churchill spoke, however, The atmosphere here now is no longer one of calm scoffing at Americans for being tod jittery. . ; Now it is something like that in America when the Yuyoslavs shot down a U. 8. plane a

But near as Berlin is (only 600 alr miles away), British Communists are “making mischief” even closer to home. In these very | words, Prime Minister Attlee de-| clares they are mixed up in the | London _ dockworkers’ strike] which dfags on expensively—an-| other threat to the Marshall

of years ago, or more recently when Jan Masaryk was found dead and Czechoslovakia collapsed into the python grip of the Communists. No One Wants War No’one here wants a war, of course. Nevertheless this England, which is badly split on domestic issues, seems more or less solidly united with Mr. Churehill; “The only hope of peace is to be strong, to act with other great freedom-loving nations, and to make it plain to the aggressor, while time remains, that we should bring the world against him and defend ourselves and our cause by every means should he strike a felon's blow.” : The conservative London Daily Telegraph points out that Mr. Churchill departed from a slash ing attack on Socialist domestic policy to give full support to So-
