Hoosier Business Hits Record High

Reports 1%’ Increase Over January Mark

Times State Service BLOOMINGTON, June 24 — Business in May reached an alltime high in Indiana. The Indiana Business Review reported the index for May about 1 per cent above the high of January. And there was nothing to indicate a lessening of production for the rest of the summer. Only a strike, the report said, could check the business spiral in the next few months. “After some hesitation, prices

up in May. The wholesale index rose about 1 per cent and stopped just short of the previous high for the year and the all-time high of May, 1920. Mid-May farm prices were down slightly from mid-April.” a "Receipts Shrink The review said advertising lineage and bank debits failed to increase the usual amount: between April and May. Building

ity and, seasonally, coal production was the best this year. Department store sales were slightly higher than in April.

Higher prices did not offset the shrinkage in receipts. The Indiana limestone trade is booming, the highest level of activity since December, 1941. Bank Debits Gain In Indianapolis, the report

about 3 per cent for the month and about 10 per cent over the same month last year.

Ex-Deputy Killed During Scuffle With Divorcee

I Rn. COLUMBUS, O., June 24 (UP) —A coroner's verdict was awaited today in the death of Frank V. Martin, 48, former Franklin County sheriff's deputy who was shot to death here yesterday with his own gun. An attractive 29-year-old brunet divorcee, Mrs. Henrietta Virginia Pearson, mother of two children, was held without charge for further questioning today.

Witnesses at an all-night inquest said the shooting took place on the front porch of Mrs. Pearson’s home where Mr. Martin was a frequent visitor. » ” » MRS. PEARSON told sheriff's investigators that Mr. Martin came to her house and said, “Doll, I'm going to kill you” and added, “if you want to, you can shoot me first.” She said she asked him for the gun and he gave it to her. Then she attempted to run out the front door but he grabbed her. “While we were scuffling,” she said, “I kicked him on the shin to make him let go of the gun and as I did the gun went off.”
