WHOPPER HOOKED—I+'s how to catch ‘em. And you don't have to set out on a long trip to haul in free food for the skillet. The theory of Mrs. Marie Canary, 1613 S. Hawthorne Lane, is: Stay home and save the dif-
ference. She shared this five-pou Monday. Fished from the bank,
bait. There was plenty of excitement in the immediate vicinity when Mrs. Canary brought in her prize catch,
all in knowing where they are and
nd large-mouth bass in Fell Creek too, and used night crawlers for
one to ring the bell. We pulled into Corpus Christi, this beautiful city of 125,000 population and the 20-story Driscoll Hotel just six years old, last night after two days of loafing around the tarpon capital of the world, Port Aransas.
We made a desperate try again yesterday morning. Andy, one of Texas’ best fishermen, if not the
best, and I went out on the fishing boat operated by . Johnny ‘Matthews, one of the more famous guides in the Aransas district. We bravely started out into the gulf but soon hove to and put back into the bay. You just don’t navigate these fishing boats in that kind of water, much less catch fish. We baited up eight-inch mullet and trolled one end of the bay to another. But we didn’t get a single strike. Neither did any of the fishermen on the other boats. » ~ . THIS IS what we are running into down here. At Laguna Madre, in the region just south of Corpus, a red-tinged sheet of water has formed. This is an expanse of highly concentrated salt water from the dry winds and hot sun of the past few weeks which have evaporated much of the ordinary water, The Corpus Christi Times refers to the phenomenon as a “salt run,” and it is a curse to the fishermen. Fish that are caught in the red water, go blind from the high concentration of salt and
and rot. In 1934, such a “salt run” destroyed an estimated $2 million worth of fish in Laguna Madre. William Wright, manager of Herndon’s Marine Products Co. quoted in the Corpus Times, said: # » ” “I WAS down in the Laguna on a fishing trip about a week .and a half. I saw men trying to fish in that water and they weren’t getting- a thing. You could put your hand in that water and it felt like a hot bath. “Last week, two of our boats were there a whole week pole (fishing and got less than 100 pounds of fish. “Your correspondent found a chance to go swimming in the surf but he didn't stay in long. It felt like someone hitting you on the back with a two by four when those waves slapped you off your feet. But it's still a lot of fun.” That was the last of the Gulf of Mexico as far as this trip is concerned.

The resort and fishing towns from Galveston to the Mexican border hope to bring tourists to their land of fishing, sunshine and bathing. Probably in the next five or 10 years, this coastline, still prac tically a frontier, will see its dream realized. Your Hoosier correspondent, en route home in a day or two, is already making plans for a return visit.

FT. WORTH, Tex., June 22 (UP)—Les Burge has been asked by the Ft. Worth baseball club to withdraw as manager of the Ft. Worth Cats in the Texas League, it was disclosed today. Cal McLish worked the route for the Indians and chalked up his sixth victory, and his sixth straight. He gave up 10 hits but
