TEEN TALK— Barn Dance

By JEAN MANEY THE WEST SIDE Open Door Canteen members have only half a fire station and a juke box as their total material assets. But their boundless enthusiasm and hopes for the future provide a full treasury of optimism. : The teen-agers organized the group three months ago with the help of their parents and other interested adults. The volunteer firemen of Wayne Township gave them half of their station for a recreation center. ” » » ON CANTEEN nights the fire engine is rolled out and table tennis equipment takes its place. The first project of the teeners was to buy a juke box. They have dues of $1 a year and a 10-cent admission fee for each party. : ' A barn dance in early July is the first public project the teeners have planned. The dance will be held in the YWCA and will be open to all city teen-agers and their patents. & » . THE DREAM of the canteen members is to finance and build a community clubhouse next door to the fire station. There are 60 active members in the group. The ages range from 12 to 20 years, but voting privileges are reserved for teen-

Bridge— Endplay Is

She allowed the opening lead of the king of hearts to hold, and when West continued with the queen, declarer did not make the mistake of holding up until the third round. She won the trick with the ace of hearts. - » »

SHE KNEW that she had three spade tricks, a heart, three clubs and the ace of diamonds, A three-three break in either spades or clubs would give her the ninth trick. She could take the diamohd finesse, but if it lost, West would cash

Most of the dining-out suits and. dresses rely more on fabric than cut for their dress-up appearance. Shoulders for the most part are covered, necklines modest and sleeves cut to below the elbow. Skirts, however, run to romantic, dancing fullness. Some are ankle-length, but the majority are hemmed no longer than daytime costumes. Colors range from black through midnight blues to coppery tones and a cool, pale char|treuse. Large, black cartwheels jand picture hats are shown with most of them—the better to catch the candlelight and keep the soot off the shoulders. Many of them are copies of French originals, offered for sale at about $75. | Favored alternates to satin are lace dresses, most of which are cut with slightly dressier lines. Black satins are shown in jacquard weaves—small sheaves of wheat are the dull-on-shining pattern for one of the prettiest. Men and Women—

By ERNEST E. BLAU ADVERTISING TALKS to women louder than to men because the gals are the big spenders—they peel off eight of every 10 retail dollars. So most advertising tries hard to flag female interest— and sex and romance do that faster than anything else. Almost half the advertising in women’s magazines includes some sex or romance in picture or headline. “Cheesecake” advertising—the display of lovely limbs and feminine superstructure — gets more attention from female readers than from male, believe it or not. Advertising men say 53 per cent of women remember .that kind compared to only 47 per cent of men. - » = SO AS LONG as the babes want hearts and flowers and moonlight with their disinfectants and war paint, who are advertisers to try to change ‘em? A woman, more than a man, identifies herself personally with the things she buys—and there's something mighty promising to

If advertising got too literal, and just said, for example, “Zilch's face powder is a chemical mixture that has been ground up as fine as flour, It doesn’t even scratch. Rub some on!"—shiny noses would soon be a dime a dozen. And a lot of American industries would be out of jobs.
