By JEAN TABBERT MAKING friends is not an unusual attribute of the successful clubwoman , . . but encouraging their hopes, and guiding those until they have “hatched,” is the distinctive gift of Mrs. Russell R. Benson. It's a certainty that gift was one of the bigger factors in her election this spring to the presidency of the ianapolis Branch, American sociation of University Women.

Winning her spurs as a popular book reviewer for AAUW and other groups, Mrs. Benson multiplied her duties when she assumed office for a two-year term. Next fall she begins attending the 15 study group meetings held each month by the AAUW, as well as monthly board and general meetings. She also becomes an advisory member of numerous religious and educational groups. In addition to this full schedule, Mrs. Benson has some plans of her own. Following up a survey of kindergartens made last year by the AAUW PreSchool Study Group, Mrs. Benson will guide the Education Study Group in a similar analysis of public schools.

It would seem that time for hobbies might be lacking. If pressed, however, Mrs. Benson admits that “protegees” are her

real hobby. Hastenin make clear that Mr. n has as much to do it as she, the

AAUW prexy says her husband gives professional advice to « many of the acquaintances who come to their house.

LA » - NUMBERED among the persons the Bensons have ‘“encouraged” are Margaret BourkeWhite, photographer, and Jon Whitcomb, artist. Just as important, Mrs. Benson f:els, are the average folk who may never make a very hig splash but whose success is as valuable to society. ~ The Benson partnership extends to Mr. Benson’s career. His wife manages his commercial photography laboratory as well as treks along with him “on location” for outdoor pictures. More reasons time flies so fast are a 21-year-old and a teen-age son. Away at school most. of the year, the sons become the nucleus of the white colonial house at 428 W, 44th St. when they come home. Mabel Benson likes to cook

and her fame has spread beyond her family. The protegees who re-visit the Bensons all have favorite dishes which she must prepare. A graduate of Ohio. Wesleyan University where she met her husband, Mrs. Benson was honored at the '42 Centennial with a Degree of Distinction and Merit . . , awarded for an alumni party she gave for the university while the Bensons lived in Cleveland. Undoubtedly the numerous Benson protegees can think of many other reasons for Mabel Benson's receiving that distinction and merit award.
