Allowance for Dead
Air Space Helps
Prevent Possibility. of Condensation ‘By HUBBARD COBB, Your Handy Man "We are happy to announce that one reader. has taken our advice and started to insulaté his attic so that he will be cooler ‘this sum-
mer and warmer next winter. So
far he hasn't got very far because
doubt has entered his head. He is undecided whether to insulate the
attic floor or the attic roof.
ow this question is answered by asking what the attic is to
be used for. If you have someone. living up there or plan to have someday and he, she or it is not sub-human, then—he—-would appreciate it if you would insulate the attic roof so ‘that the attic itself is comfortable in both winter and summer,
- On the other hand, If the attic fs not used for living quarters then you might just as well insu-
late the attic floor. If you do this, however, you want to be absolutely sure that no heat can get into the attic through the attic door or other openings. By insulating the attic floor| you eliminate the attic as space to be heated and this makes things a lot easier for the heating equipment. By the way, remember that when you insulate the attic roof you don’t want to run the insulation right up to the roof peak. Run it across a few feet below the peak on collar beams and install louvers at each-end as near thé peak of thé roof as possible, By providing, this dead air space between the ifisulation and the peak with ventilation provid-
condensation around the roof and |

Leaky Roof Is Bad But Not Disastrous There ar® few things In this world that will send a home owner into a fit of dismal despair quicker than to find that his roof
is leaking, not just here and there, but all over. Well, now while this
~|is- bad it isn’t quite as bad as it
might be. (A highly debatable point, if you ask us). First of all, in the case of wood shingles or composition roofing it is possible to get it through another year or so by cating it with a heavy asphalt compound. This coating probably won't 100k very pretty but it wi keep out the rain. In the second ‘place, when you do get around to putting on a new roof, the old one can stay right ‘Where It Is. of roofing will give added pro-| tection and help prevent heat loss through the roof,
Just about any type of roofing can go over the old except that slate shingles should nof be used over wood shingles because the surface is too uneven. If shingles are to be used over shingles it is mecessary to cut back along the old roofing a couple of inches atthe edges and} tack on strips of wood, These provide a nailing base for the first course of new shingles and also provide a nice flush edge. Before the new roofing goes on, replace] any missing shingles, tack down loose and warped ones and be sure no nails are sticking up. And speaking of. nails, be sure to use the right type as well as the right sort for the new roofing. |The nails should be of a non(corrosive type and should be long enough to penetrate about three{fourths of the way through the roof sheating boards.
'New-Type Interior Paints Available
Some weeks ago we wrote what | we considered something of an epic on what to look for in a good exterior paint. Now we are about to’ take up the even more confusing subject of interior wall paints. The two extremes of interior wall paint are oil paint and calcimine. Ofl paint is applied in three coats over new plaster and two toats over old. It makes a durable finish and one that can be washed repeatedly without ill effects. The great disadvantage is the time and effort in application and the smell of fresh paint that sometimes lingers for days after
Calcimine, on the other hand, goes on in one coat, dries fast and doesn’t smell. The disadvantage of this finish is that it can’t be washed and has to be removed before a new finish can be applied.
thinned paints have come on the market. Some of these are casein or resin emulsion paints and while water is used as a vehicle many brands of water-thinned paints can be washed with good results. The advantage of these paints

{odor and the ability to cover a surface in one coat (sometimes). Some of these paints can’t be painted over while others can. Added to this list of “one coat, fast-drying paints is a new oil paint which, we are told, is wash able, We haven't tried it yet. In short, vhen it comes to interior paints, you have a- wide choice depending more or less on what room the paint is to be used in. ne
Pipe Eyesores Can Be Camoflaged
Looking at the darkest side of the issue, a pipe is a pipe and if it happens to run across the living room ceiling there is no point in trying to pretend we wanted it there or disguise ‘it tq resemble a long earth worn or Virginia creeper. When it comes to exposed pipes your best bet is to paint them the same color as the background and get in ‘the habit of looking some place else. Painting pipes is not difficult, but you'll run into a few problems now and then, Galvanized iron pipe. will have to be washed down with vinegar and then wiped with benzine or turpentine to remove the grease before it will hold paint. After this use a regular interior {ofl paint. If the pipes are insulated, you'll have to give the insulation a coat of size before the paint goes on. The size will prevent the insulation from absorbing the paint as fast as you brush it on.
The cast iron soil pipe used for the sewer system usually has an asphalt coating over it and you'll have to give this a covering of
asphalt will bleed through the oil paint and you'll have a. considerable mess to worry about Sometimes, in fact, most of the time, even painting one of these large pipes still won't do much to conceal it. What you can do in this case is build a wood box around the pipe and then paint the sides of the box. Now instead of having a pipe running up ihiough the living room you have box—a tremendous improveBs don't you think?
Judicious Grading
Dries Wet Basements
It's a strange thing that when you go out to dig a well water gets scarce as hen’s teenth but when you dig ‘a basement you have to watch your step to keep from drowning. This is called “cussedness” and applies to some humans as well as to water.
But just because trout live in
