FUZSLING TO educators is why a small town may have obscure graduates for a decade and then turn out in one class a number who achieve success in a variety of fields.
high s¢hool
The 1912 class at Tell City an example, '
Among the outstanding seniors in this class
were: Pat, Dutch and Dooley,
Dutch and Pat were lanky, awkward country
boys, while Dooley was a cocky,
three boys were good in their studies, but they
also found time for mischief.
Dutch was George J. Ress, 53-year-old assist ant postmaster here whose nomination as puss
master has been sent to the U. 8,
firmation. If approved--and everything .points to a continuation of the recently adopted government policy of selecting career men—Mr. Ress will suewho
ceed Adolph Seidensticker, Sept. 30.
Pat was Maj, Gen. E. D. Patrick, who was killed ‘in the Philippines during World War II.
Dooley, to whose Indianapolis friends the name
will sound strange was U. 8, Wichser,

kid to his old friends. Both will journey back to Tell City the last of this month to pay homage to-the third boyhood ‘pal for whom repatriation=funeral services will be held. \
Dutch Reminisces MR.

little guv. The legs and reminisced. “Mith and hookey were our two pastimes in those days, .We used to go to the creek to fish, when we'd skip.school. But, we seldom skipped together, because our families were so close that we ¢ouldn’t afford to disappear all at the same time.”
Senate for con-
will © retire Pat's last letter to Dutch, just before he fell in
battle, It was a boyish note to an old pal. Dutch cleared his throat of sentiment and began to talk about the 34 years of government service behind his nomination to the $0400-a-year local post. " “I'm really not big enough for this Job,” he smiled confidentially, “No man is; the postoffice department ls getting too big with its 400,000 employees.” Mr. Ress would supervise 1800 of them. Two points have been uppermost in his mind during. the nine years he has been assistant postmaster, He has heen anxious to provide good postal service to the public and he has worked to see that subordinates were treated as individuals, each with his own personal life and problems.

dressed Mr. Ress uses a good bit of psychology. He acquired part of it, in all probability, during the seven years he spent as a postal inspector, the sleuthing division of the postoffice, In this job,
the integrity and efficiency of the department's employees; not likely to make anyone especially! popular.
Frank, Straight-Forward YET. DUTCH learned to go into the various
fidence of others. Oné little psychological trick he used frequently was to “bum” though never to excess. “When you offer a guy a cigaret, you don't’ accomplish--much, he opined. “But, when you ask for one. you become indebted. Most of us like to have others indebted to us for favors or service.” It's easy to talk to Dutch. He talks like al working man. He is frank and straight-forward; “he-can“tell ® story along with the best: of them! The men figure he's one of their kind, His unassuming manner keeps him relaxed. When he goes fishing—as he does at every oppor-| tunity=—he doesn't have to force himself into a/ state of calmness like many of the “big business” type. Dutch can sit for hours in a boat and never ‘move. And, he chooses live bait for his nimrod activity. _ There's nothing fancy about Dutch. {By Kenneth Hufford)
