which covered a 12 per cent increase in expenditures. The 13-cent increase is on the assumption that the state contributes the same amount of teachers’ aid as this year, that ‘property valuations remain the same and that the school city re- “ eceives the expected $500,000 grant

Barve.
Last night the school commissioners approved a $5,750,378 emergency appropriation for the last six months of this year, The figure is 12 per cent above a similar appropriation made a year AgO.
Operating Costs Up The increase in appropriations * is due, according to school oMclals, to the higher pay scales adopted for teachers, librarians and custodians and the increase in operating costs. The 1947-48 budget totaled $12,690,000. 'A 12 per cent increase in 1948-49 would raise it above $14,000,000, the highest in history, The present school tax rate is $1.44 for each $100 of taxable property. The emergency appropriations are required each year, accord: - ing to Maxwell V. Bailey, business director, -until -the school budget can be approved this fall by the Marion County board of tax adjustment and the state board of tax commissioners. The emergency appropriation will be included in the full year's budget at that time. The official tax rate will be fixed at that time, OK Architect's Plans ~ The board approved architect's preliminary plans for a $400,000 addition to School 26. The project calls for 12 classrooms, a branch library and a physical education room, + Lease to -the city park department of 11 school playgrounds to be used in summer recreation the board last night.
