WHEN A TEACHER at the school died, Mr Harris was asked to take the post. Thus, he began a 50-year career that was summarized by the trustees: “He has sincerely dedicated himself and all his energies to the noble work of teaching thousands of boys a worthy trade . .. and more than that all those valuable human qualities so necesgary to the success and happiness of every human individual,” meres Mr Harris tacked his new tas in 1898 with the mastery of having served people in his shop without their knowing of his defect. Even the mailman was unaware. The good-natured shopkeeper talked like anyone else, although with less inflection to his voice. Mr. Harris had already become an expert lip-reader. While teaching, he began to notice one of his students and consider her in a little different . Jight. ‘They were married and had four daughioe ters, all with perfect hearing. oR “A deaf person can concentrate better than © a hearing person,” the still energetic Mr. Harris was quick to point out.. He contends deaf people are careful automobile drivers, too, and cites a Philadelphia traffic record showing this. “We depend more upon our eves and other senses..-A- hearing person gets careless when driv. ing and says to himself, ‘I can hear a danger; I don’t have to look’,” added the veteran teacher,
