~ Ulcers, Cancer Are

Biggest Problems iimeaBY ERNIE HILL

ROME, Italy, May 27--Stom-achs all over the world are causing physicians more trouble today than at any time in the hgtory of medical science. : This is the consensus of 500 doctors from 32 countries who have just closed their 6th annual convention of the International College of Surgeons, here in Rome. ’ Ulcers and cancers of the stomach are the biggest problem, because the physicians themselves

are having trouble agreeing on|

their causes and cures. Progress on Ulcers More progress is being made on ulcers than on cancer. The surgeons expressed a number of views on the causes of the former during their recent sessions, both in the presentation of formal papers and in informal discussion. One paper described the treatment of cutting nerves to the stomach for relief. The physicians admitled candidly that they were still without satisfactory explanation, much less treatment, for cancer, Whether cancer of the stomach results from a virus or a germ is still a disputed point. Medicine's Big Conquest However, cancer ‘of course is medicine's big subject of conquest, Many of the topnotch doe-

tors present at. the Romie. ses

sions, as well as sonie of the world's greatest research laboratories, are working feverishly to discover cause and remedy for it. The surgeons also compared experiences in the treatment of goiter, gall bladder trouble, lockJaw, appendicitis, diabetes, kidney rupture, and lung and glandular disturbances, Dr, Max Thorek of Chicago, permanent general secretary of the college and its founder, said that member physicians in every

the 166 papers presented at this year's sessions. These will give them the advantage of the ex-periences-of - their colleagues.

Preparing Junior for

New Arrival

Almost all children show same signs of jealousy when the new baby arrives. It is pretty hard to Bive up some of the attention, to feel that there is another child to be loved by mother and father. But the experience needn't be too severe a one. First of all, we know that the older youngster has mixed feelings. He wants a new baby and at the same time he wishes it could be sent back “where it came from.” When parents accept the idea that it is hormal for a child to feel jealous! and are relaxed about it, they can| help him with the problem in a| Number of ways. And, of course, the coming event should not be kept as a Secret. He should be one of the first to know of it. He can help Bet things ready for the baby. But this is not enough. Mother and Dad should both ‘be careful to spend extra time with Junior before and after the baby's arrival so that he won't have too much of the feeling that he is)‘ being dethroned. This may be a bit hard for fother ‘at. first and Dad miay Ave to do double-duty, but as he baby needs. less confining re she can give more attention © her first-born, So
