Compromise “Holiday Parade Route OK'd

Fight Between City, Patriotic Units Ended

A compromise rotate for the annual Memorial Day parade was worked out -in- the Board of Safety meeting today. A parade permit was granted for_a route which will start at North and Pennsylvania Sts. and will end on the west steps of Monument Circle. The compromise ended a fight between patriotic organizations and the Safety Board and Mayor Feeney over refusal to issue a permit for the 80-year-old parade custom. Route Shortened The new route is not so extensive as the one originally. requested. 2 The original route, the Safety Board contended, . would tie up traffic on all principal streets on a day when thousands of extra motorists will be crowding the downtown area. : Safety Board members still stressed today, however, that the pew route is “subject to traffic conditions.” . Should traffic prohibit the compromise route, the Safety Board

.- Normally -the parade the same day as the race, when most out-of-town traffic is ready at Speedway. This year, however, the parade will be: held on-Sunday, when the downtown area will be crowded with pre-race visitors. Mayor Feeney today said he still does not feel the parade is in the best interest of safety and traffic expediency but that the compromise route is less a hazard ‘thian the original request. “This definitely does not constitute a reversal,” he added. “We never denied a permit for 4 parade as has been stated. We merely denied a permit for the requested line of march.”
