Watkins Files For Lt. Governor

By ROBERT BLOEM ‘John A. Watkins, publisher and secretary of the Indiana Democratic Editorial Assoi clation, was in the Sheryl race for lieutenant governor today. His announcement to a small | group of editor friends and party members at the Athletic Club was interpreted as meaning he and other editors regarded former Governor Henry Schricker as a sure candidate for the Governor ‘nomin&tion, ~~ LR Wn Ay ROR

Before Mr. Schricker re-entered the party's Governor picture, Mr, Watkins was regarded as a probable candidate for the top spot on §| the ticket. However, Mr, Watkins made it clear in his announcement at the dinner party that he did not in8 tend to latch his campaign onto | Mr, Behrickers coat talls. He #8 sald he was “on my own” and| not part of a ticket slated by anybody. Mr. Watkins, who is 55, is al veteran of both world wars and | | past state commander of the | American Legion. In his announcement statement he made no reference to Mr, Schricker | personally, but said simply: “I fully appreciate the responsibility of the Democratic party i to provide good government. J am sincere in my desire to give a og Dern hand to a Democratic Governor.” Mr. Watkins is the second candidate to announce for the office of Lieutenant Governor in the Democratic campaign, First in the race was State Senator Von A. Eichhorn of Uniondale.
