On Jewish Snipers HAIFA, Apr. 21 (UP)—British authorities today ordered virtually all their troops to abandon the big port city of Haifa, British troops later in the day used cannon and tanks at Haifa | against Jews sniping at traffic on the only road the British planned to hold until their army is evacuated.

Arabs Outnumbered As suddenly as the British acted to leave Haifa undefended, signs sprang up that the Arabs and Jews were ready to fight for the city. Some quarters predicted that the battle, the first big test in the war for Palestine, might start within a day or two. The Jews outnumbered the Arabs by about four to one in Haifa, a city of some 150,000. The Jewish militia Haganah occupies heights overlooking the Arab sections. Casualties by the hundreds appeared likely in case of a fight td the finish. | A British spokesman admitted that the withdrawal was “an open invitation” to the Jews and Arabs to have it out.

Pay Raises Asked By County Judges

Marion County's judges today said they could see no reason why a boost in salary for Lake County judges should not also be reflected on their pay checks. _ Judges of Marion County's Superior and Criminal Courts are now receiving $10,000 a year. Yesterday, the Indiana Appellate court handed down an opinfon that Lake County judges are entitled to a $600 annual increase.
