British Abolish Death Penalty
LONDON, Apr. 15 (UP)—Great Britain, which once hanged criminals for stealing a loaf of bread, abolished the death penalty for murder today. For a five-year experimental period the maximum penalty for murder will be life imprisonment. During that time hanging will be reserved only for those convicted under ‘the Treachery Act for such crimes as treason or sabotaging the Royal Dockyards. : The bill abolishing the death penalty for murders was passed by Commons last night by a vote of 245 to 222, Members of|the Labor Party outside the government pushed the bill through Commons. Laborite members in the government had opposed the

WASHINGTON, Apr. 15 (UP) —The government today asked Americans to put up $2 billion for
savings bonds in the next 10}
weeks to help fight high prices and “to win the peace.” Cabinet members, Congressmen from both parties and public officials throughout the country joined President Truman in ask- « ing support for the new bond drive. Its slogan is “America’s Security Is Your Security.” " This is the Treasury's eighth savings bond loan. There were six during the war, and a “Victory Loan” in 1945.

Rue J. Alexander of Pine Village, sixth ‘district © Republican chairman and former secretary of state, was sworn in at noon today as Lieutenant Governor. He will serve out the remainder of the term of Richard T. James, who resigned Mar. 31 to accept the post of vice president and treasurer of Butler University. The job may be without pay for Mr. Alexander if State Auditor A. V. Burch sticks to his contention that under a 1941 law the auditor should take over the duties of Lieutenant Governor in case of a vacancy. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice James Emmert of the Indiana Supreme Court in a brief ceremony in the Governor's office. ;
Probe Death of Boy Found on Road
KNOX, Ind, Apr. 15 (UP)—

investigated the apparent hit-and-run death of Gilbert Rodreguez, 17, whose body was found on a road near North Juison last night. State police said there was no witness of the accident. Rodreguez was employed as a worker on a farm near North Judson, they said, Efforts were being made to reach an aunt of the victim living in- Texas. Police said she was his only known relative.
