Men and Women— a] Smoking Manners Are Bad Among Both Men and Women

! By ERNEST E. BLAU butts that they pose a major R SOME reason, men cleanup problem after every and women seem to aban- run.

don their manners when they light up to smoke. And when you figure that almost 35 billion cigarets are smoked by Americans in a Year, that can add up to a lot of bad manners. : Mealtime smokers, who wouldn't think of sticking their -elbows into another diner’s ribs while cutting their steak, think nothing at all of blowing smoke into the food and faces of people around them. They'll flick ashes and even drop burnt matches and butts into a partly empty cof-. fee cup.

Even when ash trays are liberally provided, smokers go on messing up things—including themselves. As one male observer says, “There's no more depressing sight than a man or woman on the street with a cigaret drooping from the lips and ashes falling on the clothes as walk.” You'd think that millions of women coming into the smoking circle would have tended to improve smoking manners but not so. A survey made by a woman’s magazine among several thousand women, sums up the situation: “Feminine smoking habits are barbaric.”

Proper Paint Helps Save On Fuel

Consider fuel saving next fall when painting radiators this spring. The paint on the radiator may help or hamper it in giving off heat. Metallic paints, such as .the bronze or aluminum .often used on “radiators, cut down the amount of heat given off. Shiny white paint has the same effect. This is because these paints give the radiator a bright surface, which reflects heat inward as well as outward, thereby preventing full radiation. | In contrast, a flat paint with some color in it may improve the heating efficiency of the radiator. In general the darker the color the more heat given off by the radiator. Few people would choose black radiators in their homes, but a dark shade of flat paint that harmonizes with the color of the room can be used to make the radiators both efficient and inconspicuous. Other radiator tips for fuel conservation offered by engineers are to avoid covering the top of the radiator with a cloth, books or other articles which prevent free circulation of air. Keep the radiator clean. A heavy coat of dust or cobwebs acts as an insulator and encloses the heat. Use a sheet of shiny metal in back of the radiators in wall recesses to reflect the heat out into the room. Before turning on, the heat next fall, check the radiator air vents to see that they are working properly and that air is not
