Doyle and Klier Singled for Honors

By BILL PITTMAN

The first showing of the Sports Round Up, sponsored last night in the Knights of Columbus Hall by the Men's Club of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, was pronounced success enough to prompt plans for 2n annual performance. The first performance was complete with the delays and confusions attending the are} showing of worthwhile events, getting under way a half-hour schedule, but no one seemied to mind. The event was both in honor of James Doyle, Butler University's most valuable cager, and Leo Klier, most popular player on the Indianapolis Kautskys pro{fessional basketball team, and in memorium of the late John Schmutte, coach and friend of the boys of St. Joan of Arc parish. Klier could not attend, as he is in Chicago for the world championship hardwood tourney. Sports Notables Sports notables in the speakers’ section were Joe Dezelan, athletic director and head footpall coach of Cathedral High School; Cleon Reynolds, head basketball coach and assistant football coach; Brothers Nivard and Ambross, C.8.C., Cathedral; Bernard Doyle, Jimmy’s father; J. O. Birr, sportécaster. and former I. U. athlete; Bernard (Mike) Kelly, baseball scout for the Pirates; Dick Miller, general manager, Indianapolis hockey team; Wilbur Shaw, former auto race driver and now president of the Indianapolis Speedway Corp., and Ted Sullivan, general manager of the Indianapolis Indians. Reynolds in praising Doyle's hardwood expjoits ' predicted an All-America berth for him in the next two years, adding: that “he could already play on any professional team in any league.” Shaw, in a vivid recollection of an experience with a St. Christopher’s medallion, during the 1931 race here, caught the fancy of the more than 200 men in the meeting. Coach Dezelan predicted things to come for Cathedral gridders in the 1948 season. “We have a few boys coming back,” he said, “and we aim to teach some of these schools a lesson.” Doyle, the guest of honor, lived up to his bashful reputation by declining to speak.
