Stassen Boom Also Gains In Last 72 Hours
State Holds Key To GOP Trend
By CHARLES T. LUCEY Scripps-Howard Staff Writer MILWAUKEE, Apr. 5 — Wisconsin chooses tomorrow among a big man half-a-world-away wearing five stars and a goldbraided cap, 8 Michigan farm boy who did. all right in the city and Minnesota neighbor dead-set on getting ahead in politics. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Gov. ,mds E. Dewey and Harold Stassen make their bid for this state’s 27 Republican presidential delegates in an election fateful for ali of them. AL Politicians still gave Gen. cArthur the edge today but said the last 72 hours had brought an upward trend in Mr. Stassen’s chances. nich the 3A e extent to whic - rr might dent the MacArthur lead was uncertain. Local prophets say the challenge is from him rather than from Mr, Dewey. Eye Wisconsin Voting
What Wisconsin does tomorrow will affect Republican presidential politics out of all proportion to the pumber of delegates involved. A couple dozen states will be watching this vote to detect which way the GOP bandwagon may roll this year. Gov. Dewey stands to lose most by a poor showing. He won big here in 1940 and 1844, and if he fails to run well tomorrow his opponents will say he has lost his appeal and that the counry does not want a once-defeat-GOP Presidential nominee. Some politicians say Mr. ewey's appeal now seems to ave diminished just as Wendell illkie's had before his cause as demolished in the primary ere four years ago. Yet unless Gen. MacArthur is aten badly there will be no about tomorrow's
Willkie withdrew, MacArthur Appeal Gains Gov. Dewey still’ would have delegate strength elsewhere plus his big 96-vote bloc from New York. Gen. MacArthur's appeal has been advanced sharply in recent weeks by his announcement that he would accept the Republican nomination and by President Truman's special. message to Congress on the gravity of world affairs and our need to prepare. Gen. MacArthur hasn't even been in the U. 8S. for 13 years. There are wide gaps in the sum of knowledge as to his political, social, and economic thinking. Yet ex-Gov. Philip La Follette suggests that his social and economic thinking is much more progressive than the conservatives believe.
Boost for Stassen Mr. Stassen has with him Thomas E. Coleman, former state GOP chairman and Victor Johnson, his Wisconsin manager, the men most responsible for helping to elect Sen. Joseph MecCarthy over Bob La Follette two years ago.
recent days by sizable victories In delegate-choosing conventions in Towa and Maine. The stakes are perhaps greater in tomorrow's Wisconsin vottng than in any primary in recent years. The Republicans have a chance to go into the White House now as they haven't since
