Held for Cashing: Dead Man's Checks
A 48-year-old factory worker was being held under $2500 bond today because he cashed $275 in welfare checks that “kept on coming” to his roommate for months after death. ‘ . George Boswell, who lives in a shack in the rear of 1114 N. Belmont Ave., told Federal authorities hé took the checks from August, 1947, when the recipient, Stewart Glenn, died, to last month. x At that time, an investigation by the county welfare department disclosed Mr, Glenn's death. Arthur Wooden, director, said welfare investigators make a personal visit to each recipient only every nine months, A “clerical error” in checking daily reports ‘of vital statistics accounts for the oversight in this case, he added. Boswell was arraigned yesterday before a U. 8. commissioner on a mall theft charge.
Fishermen Gape At Gaping Serpent
COOS BAY, Ore, Apr. 2 (UP) —Jack Ray and Jacob Lind,
said today they saw a monkeyfaced creature in the sea.
They were trolling for cod off Whiskey Run earlier this week when they saw what at first appeared to be an upright piling drifting near the coast. It submerged every few moments and reappeared. - ; Approaching to within a few yards of the object, they said they saw a “bullet-shaped ape’s head with a flat face and unusually wide mouth.” 5 “It stared right back at us with equal curiosity and started opening and closing its mouth in a smacking gesture,”
