Test Jet Engines For Helicopters ;

Small Ones to Go On Rotor Blade Tips:

§ By MAX B. COOK Scripps-Howard Aviation Editor NEW YORK, Apr. 2—8Small jet engines to be placed on the tips of jet-propelled helicopter rotor blades are being tested for the

tric engineers of Schnectady, it , was. announced

of the USAF long - range pro4 gram in develop- ® ment of revolutionary aircraft in which jet engines and jet fuel are daily playing a more important part. Included in the Max B. Cook tests are vari-ous-size jet engines, turbo-super-chargers, automatic. pilots, a flight recorder, radar and other aircraft instruments and equipment. Special stress is being placed on the new-type jet powerplants for helicopters. Use of jet units in helicopters would revolutionize this type of ajreraft. Saving of weight and ded horsepower will allow heavier loads and more fuel to be carried. Eco Power, instead of being applied to the center of the blades, will be available to the tips where

_|power is needed.

It is also expected that eventually much greater speed will result. Present cruising speed of helicopters is around 100 to 135 miles per hour.
